Just bought a 1988 javelin 18'. I ripped up the floor and taking out the foam I noticed top 2" of the ribs rotted. Can I sister up one side with pvc 1x6 and then glass over the old rib? Charkate

Do the 'ribs' run fore (front(bow)) and aft (back(stern)) or port (left) to starboard (right)?

I suspect you're referring to stringers (run fore and aft).

If you havent dug down to the bottom of a stringer cavity, I'd bet there is more rot then just the top 2inches, if not on all the stringers, at least 1.

Short answer to your question is, NO, you cant simply cut the tops off the stringers and sister a pvc board to them.

I was gunna suggest trying a different BBQ sauce ...
If the stringers are rotten on top it won't be long before there rotten all the way through .. If you plan on installing a new deck then you may as well install new stringers .... Old rotten wood is heavy ... Have you checked the transom yet ?
Like proshadetree said poly or epoxy don't like to stick to pvc and would probably eventually delaminate ..
Welcome aboard !

Even without pictures . . . it sounds like you have gone pretty far in the demolition process . . . you might as well do it right and replace the structure. Odds are that it is rotting more than you may think, and you may never get it to work out unless you do a more complete re-build.

My 2 cents, take out ALL old wood period. Replace with composite if money is not a problem, pressure treated otherwise. Make sure all old wood out, dry real good, replace right, peace of mind.
Also I just sold a boat with transom rot to a guy with a boat shop. He said to never ever use the pourable transom filler like seacast. He said too many people slip up one way or the other, and it doesn't attach itself to the existing fiberglass well and end up with bigger problems. Old fashioned way still the best.

Not real wild with pressure treated wood. I dont think resin sinks in as well and i have noticed reaction with stainless steel screws. Dont think its what i would use but some have with good results.

Titanium, pressure treated plywood isnt ideal unless its kiln dried after treatment, and thats hard for most DIYers to even find, or find reasonably priced.

Never heard of SeaCast (or similar) problens. Several here have used it w great results, sphelps is just 1 that has

SeaCast is excellent as long as proper preparation have been taken,... too many ppl pour it over rotted 'pulp' expecting miracles.

I have used seacast a few times .
No problems so far . I'm still waiting on the video or documented proof of a seacast failure . Maybe they exist . Idk .
That being said using wood to rebuild this boat will be your best option unless you don't mind spending the extra cash for any type composite .

Wood is NOT the problem when it comes to boats...it's either Poor Craftsmanship on the part of the MFG or previous restorer, OR, Poor Maintenance and Care on behalf of the owner. If the wood components are properly encapsulated with resin and glass and then Proper Care and Maintenance procedures are performed then the wood will last for the life of the boat. I can see using composite materials for High Performance boats and or Ocean going boats that could encounter Heavy Seas but for the normal Inland Lake style boats Wood is MORE than satisfactory.

Just and Old Dumb Okies Opinion and worth every penney you invested!!!!:D;)
