I'm working on redoing the set of access doors under my center console. The teak was all weathered and appears to have been untreated for some time, and what little bit of treatment was done looks like a thin coat of vanish that just dried and flaked off. I've gotten it disassembled, sanded, and multiple coats of teak oil have been applied and soaked in to bring back the original color. Looking at the can of oil, it states that once a desired level of treatment has been applied and 8-10 days have passed, an oil based poly can be applied on top. I like this idea as in theory it should eliminate the need to re-oil the teak. Anyone ever done this? Will UV rays/weather eventually dry out and flake off the poly, or will it remain fairly stable when exposed to the elements?

Oiling the teak is still going to leave the wood exposed to the elements. Sealing with poly will do just that - seal the surface of the wood to help retain the oil and block dirt and UV. The oiled finish, while certainly not permanent, is going to last significantly longer than it will without sealer.

I would contact the oil manufacture and get their recommended poly finish. Some times oils and polys don't play well with each other. So see what the oil manufacture suggests. JMHO

Will poly even stick to oiled teak? I thought it was one or the other - oil the wood or polyurethane it. Most urethane finishes I've used recommend application to surfaces that are clean, dry and free of oil/grease. I always thought poly over oil was a no-no.

I'm using Watco Teak Oil. It says on the can that poly can be applied over it after 72 hours of dry time.

This guide also says an oil based poly can be applied over fully cured oil.
