Getting my pontoon ready for the river I was told to use ears on a 2008 50 hp 4 stroke when cranking on the trailer. On all my 2 strokes using ears it would only take seconds to start peeing. The 4 stroke ran for over a. minute without showing a sign on peeing. Should it take this long or am I being to cautious .

I attached the hose to the flush port at the rear of the motor. Water flushed out the intake holes on the foot. Reconnecting the ears with water on full resulted in no pee.

since the motor is a 2008, you have replaced the raw water pump twice so far, havent you?

also, I could be wrong, however I do not believe your supposed to be running the motor on the flush port just the hose.

the raw water pump needs water coming into the inlet side of the pump to not burn up. running it on the flush port in the head simply keeps the motor cool while you burn the impeller up.

run the motor on the muffs if you want to run it

The motor is a 2008 mercury 50 hp 4 stroke. I did not run the motor when using the flush port; only flushed. This is the first time I have replaced the water pump on this motor. I assumed the previous owner did routine service. The impeller was badly worn. I had picked up a pump last week expecting to change it out. Put the new one in today and hooked up the ears. Before I could get off the latter and walk to the back of the pontoon. it was peeing like a Russian race horse. This is the first 4 stroke I have owned and I guess I was unsure what to expect. Thanks for the replies.
