Ok, have a really odd one here - odd to me anyway.

Late 80's Mercury classic 50 4 cylinder. Has spark. Timing is waaaay off per my timing light. Flywheel key is intact, not bent or sheared.
Trigger or Switchbox?

Thoughts?

And a huge thank you in advance.

Did someone remove those 8 bolts on the inside of the flywheel ?-------If so that is where I would start.----Easy to correct that.

Rotate the flywheel until cylinder #1, top cylinder, is at TDC and the timing mark should point directly to the timing belt pulley. If it doesn't, the flywheel wasn't positioned properly when the 8 bolts were reinstalled.

Ok I should elaborate a bit more. I was mistaken on the size, it is a 40hp Mercury, 1988. The motor was running fine last fall when it was put away for the winter. Nothing was messed with in regards to the fly wheel, timing linkages etc. It simply does not run.

Putting my timing light on TOP CYLINDER, at cranking speeds it should be at or around (cant remember currently as I type this) 33? BTDC, however it is not even close. The timing marks are not even in the realm of the timing light when it blinks.

No belts on this motor.
