Mercury 75 HP ELPTO 1995 SN: OG177054. LU is removed.

The shift cam has moved and I'm having difficulty getting it back in position. I put the shift rod in and I need to rotate it a long way to find neutral at the end of travel. When I turn it the other way it goes into FWD and stays that way until I hit neutral at the end of travel in the opposite direction. Reverse is never there. Is there a way to verify the placement of the shift cam by referencing the location of the part number on the cam?

See if you can find an illustration of a cam to help you understand what's going on. It's been 20 years since I was into a LU and this is a bit rusty but..... The cam has 3 detents about 20 degrees apart. The remainder of the 360 is either part of the cam's metal support structure, or thin air. As I recall the LU casting limits the ability of the cam to rotate the full 360 but it may not in your engine. If it does obviously you hit a brick wall when turning the cam shaft. On all other positions you will feel the spring loaded resistance of the cam follower on the front end of the prop shaft. The detents are FNR or RNF whichever way they are loaded....F is the closest to the pivot since you want the clutch dog forward to engage the rear of F gear and the others follow logic.

Thanks. You were very helpful. I was able to locate the cam in the correct position and now it shifts.
