I stepped on this interesting object in the lake today and would like to know if anyone can identify it? Once it's done soaking for a few days, I should be able to get another picture. My only guess is that is part of an old boat transom. It looks like it interlocks with another piece. Thank you for your help.

We live on Lake Erie, you wouldn't believe what strange objects wash up on shore, large hunks of steel and wood. A few years back a wooden mast in tact showed up in Port Dover Ontario caught in a commercial fishing net. Eventually they dated it from a ship during the War of 1812. Big news around here. By the way that was the war that was declared by the USA on Great Britain (Canada) the White House was burned down and the USA did not officially win. Both declared victory. Very few of my American relatives know anything about The War of 1812. Where we live was the site of The Battle of Nanticoke on the north shore of Erie. Huge naval Battles on the Great Lakes.

Almost looks like some kind of guide for an anchor chain. How big of a lake did you find it on?

It's a small lake 500 acres and only 32' deep. No channels into it. Of course the lake is built up with houses, but in it's early days cabin goers would come to it from the cities and there was restraunts on the lake. It's possible it is from a larger boat that gave rides or something. I also noticed the mark where it looks like a chain or wire cable wore into it and wondering if it might have been a mast support or anchor. There was an Indian war and burial Mounds around, but it far to new for that era.

That is a very interesting story, I can't believe that mast was that big. Thank you for sharing!

...cabin goers would come to it from the cities...
...it looks like a chain or wire cable wore into it...

Someone might have brought it 'from town' as an mooring anchor for their rowboat...meaning it could be from anything.
That thing would probably hold pretty well once it buried itself in the mud.
Not as good as a truck rim though I bet :)
