Just purchased a new starter and solenoid. Installed same. When the key is turned to start the starter makes a noise as if it engages but motor will not turn over. It is a 1980 Mercruiser MCM 260

Is this a new to you boat?
If so, as BT mentioned, I would start by pulling the plugs and drive and see if it will crank

Why did you purchase a new starter, what the symptoms you were wanting to remedy.

Yup...take plugs out and check for hydraulic lock. Might be the reason you thought it needed a new starter.

I was not getting 12 volts to the coil when the key switch was in the start position. . I only had 12 volts at the coil when the battery was on or the key switch was in run position. I talked with a few technicians that told me the starter relay/ or the starter slave solenoid could not be putting out enough voltage to fire the motor seeing as there was only 7 volts at the coil in the start position. Both the starter and slave solenoid were replaced and now I have the clunk. Could I maybe have a wrong rotation starter?

The clunk says something is locked up. I doubt you have a reverse rotation starter, but even if you did, it would turn the motor in the other direction

pull the plugs, if that doesnt work, pull the drive

if that still doesnt work, pull the motor......and tear it apart to find what is broken

It seems odd that something would be broken if the motor turned over with the old starter.

That is new and would have been good to know. The old starter would turn the motor over but not the new will not. Being a 1980 it should have the 12 3/4 flywheel, unless its been changed to the 14 inch.

Which starter did you buy?
