Evinrude HO outboards and HP

Ok...on a light hearted note...whilst these new HO big horse power engines look great and I'm a big fan of 2 strokes....
I don't get the whole 150hp HO (that actually produces 200hp), the 200hp HO (that actually produces 250hp) and the 250hp HO (that actually produces 300hp).
Why ? Why not just have the model what it actually is ? Why even call it a 150 if it is 200 ? Might as well call it a 10hp Or a 50, or a whatever you like !

Thhey do look great though. I heard that there was a recall recently for the gearboxes.

While I ha e not had any '14 and later models that I service, the '13 and earlier big 6's seem to not hold up well in rental situations. Lots of the powerheads i service ended up loseing a chlinder or two as well as several gearcases. These were the standard gearcases, not the lightening. They were on deckboats. Daily rentals on an inland lake. E-tec really let us down on these. The smaller 4's seen to do real well.

A 150 HO cannot produce 200 hp. All outboards have to be within +/- 10% of there stated hp so the most a 150 can put out is 165 hp and the least is 135. They do it a lot of different ways. Sometimes the block is a larger hp block de-tuned to get a better torque curve sometimes it is just EMM programming. It usually just ends up being a motor with it's rated HP at the upper end of the 10% margin.

Remember that factories make and sell what people will buy !!------Maybe a lot of folks buy 150 HO models.

The old Mercury XS650 comes to mind as well. They were based on the 65-horse powerhead but were tuned for peak horsepower, somewhere around 90. They existed for racing classes based on engine displacement. On a light & fast hull they are better suited. I don't know if that is also the story on a 150 H.O., but likely to some extent. More likely it is plain old marketing.

Hi flyingscot (great name and Inteigued by its origin), I'm orettt sure this is the case. The 250 is supposed to be about 300 and the 200 about 240/250. Have a wee read at it. Boat test. Com have also stated this a few times too.

Maybe just that. Just don't really get it. They certainly perform well on the boats tested on boattest.com
Can't remember the type of boat, but the other day they posted a test of a fairly heavy looking 24ft centre console offshore type boat at 4000lbs odd with a 200/250 on it and it was tested at 53 or 54mph with full tanks. Not too shabby !

the thing must be made out of balsa wood.

My buddies 24’ CC is close to #6k dry, almost 7k with full tanks. Twin 200 HPDI gets him to 42 mph.

My 22’ is a little over #5k with full tanks. 35 mph with a 200hp. A 250hp just barely breaks 40 mph

Yeah. Really surprising. I'll try and find a link. 4000lbs is 4000lbs though. I know of boats half the weight with 200hp outboards that struggle to get 55+

I had a wee read about the 150 ho and boat test specifically said the motor was tweaked to produce 165 Hp. They also specifically mention the 10% standard. The +/- 10% is not a suggestion for manufacturers.
