I need to figure out for sure what model engine I have for sure. The serial number is 5520-07440 on the transom mount. There is a disc on the engine head that says Evinrude over 10024 over 01190. Any help would be appreciated!

5520-07440.......... 5520 is a model number indicating a 1960 5.5hp Evinrude. The following numbers are the accompanying serial number.

10024-01190........ 10024 is a model number for a 1962 10hp Evinrude. The following numbers are the accompanying serial number.

Sounds like you have a 10hp powerhead installed within a 5.5 casing.

That's very interesting. That's what I came up with in my research. Now I need to figure out the oil mix. I'm guessing 24:1

Kind of on the cusp for oil ratios. I would use 24:1. Would like to see a pic of the little Frankenmotor -- have to believe the Sportsman 10 is likely to tear up the small gearcase if you run it balls to the wall. Interesting.

It probably is a 10hp motor with 5.5 stern brackets (& numbers plate). 24:1 is correct for a 10hp.

You might have a Sportwin on a Fisherman transom bracket.

Edit: F_R, you beat me, I was looking in the old brochures

That's a 10hp, someone most likely swapped transom bracket or just the model/serial number plate on the engine to use it on lakes where a 10hp would be banned. Or the engine was/is a little on the Warm side
The gearcase does look the same as the 5 1/2 just a 3 blade prop

I got it to start but it ran hot. Sizzling hot. It was pissing water down low out of two outlets just above the lower unit but the block was hot. And the water coming out wasn't warm...There was no pissing any higher up that I saw. Probably needs a new impeller is my guess. Maybe crap in the water intake system? Or is there a thermostat?

I found the stat. Was completely dry :(. So water isn't making it to the thermostat. Time for a flush

But not on a flusher (ears, muffs). Pull off the l.u. and replace the impeller, step one. I would then flush it manually up the tube. If the t.stat cover is off, you can see if the water reaches that point -- can also flush down from there. But first try to flush it first with the t.stat and cover in place. At some point, pull the t.stat and test it -- should open at about 140F.

If you fire it up, do it in a barrel -- water about half way up the l.u.

I've had that motor, and it's a good runner. Not sure about the l.u. (think the above advice about the ID tag makes sense). The 10hp driveshaft would be larger, so would think no switching.

See if the coils are intact.

I found a dirt dobber nest in one of the passageways in the thermostat housing. Flushed with some pressure downwards and poof! I started the engine and it was blowing water out of the port in the midsection. Engine did not overheat this time. Now I just gotta run this sucker out on the lake...of course after a new impeller and thermostat. As usual thanks for the help to all who replied!

That theory makes sense. Some people must think the DNR guys are stupid enough to fall for that bluff.

why would anybody put a CD plate on a 9.5 ? may as well put no plate on the motor if stolen

It is a 62 cowl. The 63 is almost identical, but has an Evinrude E logo on the wing emblem.

The 10 hp and the 5.5 hp do use identical gearcases.-----Internal parts may not be.-----The last years of the 10hp use a spline on the pinion instead of the wee woodruff key !!

That's good to know.

I'll be taking it to water pretty soon. It's sitting on my 14'x36" Jon. Replacing a 40s td20 in larger water and river use. Definitely gonna need some ballast up front as I'm a big guy! It's been cold but there's some warmer weather coming for a couple days.
