Has anyone ever tried to use an air cooled reg/rec in place of these liquid cooled ones?I hear they didn't work all that well on the Mercs either.I can buy a real good air cooled one for an 1/8 of the price of the CDI replacement unit.I figure if I can get it mounted near one of the hood vents on my XP the only time it might get hot is when you're idling. The ones used on atv's and motor cycles are usually not out in the open either so they would get hot at low speeds as well so I think it would work.I'd like to keep it stock, but I don't want it to keep failing either.

I've never seen one that is air cooled for a V6...if it could provide 12v as ACC, 13-14 v for battery recharge and a proper Tach pulse, then I'd say its worth a try.

I took apart an OEM similar volt reg that was burnt up (literally on fire), and it DOES NOT have the big fuse looking thing...so I think we give kudos to CDi for adding that protection for the boater.

Pretty sure a good motorcycle or atv one would do the trick if it was mounted in the right spot.I'll do a CDI unit this time but if it goes again then I'll look into it closer. That big ass fuse that was buried in the potting could be added externally also.
