Hi,

I recently bought a boat with twin 1999 YamahaS 150 (OX66). I removed the lower units and tried to replace the impellers, only to realized that need a special tool to remove the upper seal. However, the old impellers look like new (see picture). Please let me know if I should take the lowers units to a marine mechanic to have him replace the impellers, or just put everything back in place and wait until next year.
Do you think these impellers can last one more season?
Thanks and Happy New Year!
Lui

Are these the special tools to which you refer?

That stainless collar and spring washers probably need to be replaced with new ones anyway, since removing them can bend/deform them....just force them up with screwdrivers....then on re-assembly lift up on driveshaft while tapping down on the collar and rings to remove up/down play from driveshaft(to prevent a certain knocking sound made by gears) probably best to go ahead and install your new impellers now.....I do mine about every 3 years just so I don't have to worry about it....

Wow! The Youtube video I watched said that a special tool (puller) was required.
Anyways, I would have to order the new wave washer because the screwdrivers might cause some damage. Do you know the part number?

Thanks!

if you have no idea when they were replaced before, it would be good to replace them.
washers should not get hurt, but the cup may be.
Just be careful when removing, buy new if you hurt them

That stainless collar is a sort of interference fit on the drive shaft and usually can't be removed without deforming it....look up the parts number on the Yamaha Outboard site....And yes, if it was my motor I'd go ahead and install new impellers, change oil in the foot, new fuel/water seperater, and any other seasonal preventive maintenance....then this can be your "starting point" regarding these preventive maintenance items.
