Re: 16' Sunray Rehab

Thanks Pun! Your posts were very timely! I will be installing the floors in my little project this weekend and was giving thought to how they will join with the boat. How important is it to glass over the middle of the deck? I was told that glass in the middle of a larger piece of wood does not add to the strength. Are you going to glass yours?

Re: 16' Sunray Rehab

I'm gonna do a 6 inch tape, a 12 inch tape and cloth over the entire thing. Whoever told you glassing the middle of the floor doesn't add strength has misinformed you. It certainly adds strength, abrasion and water resistance. For the little bit extra it costs, do it, dude. It'll be worth it.

Another small update.

Here is the boat after sanding the joint smooth. Man, that was a lot of work. I used 60 grit on my DA sander.

Vacced up, and washed down with denatured alcohol. This floor is ready for biaxial tape!

More Progress made today. I got the floor all tabbed in. There's been a slight change in plans. I'm not going to do an additional layer of tape. I've decided that, because of the design of my hull, the hull would crack somewhere else before the floor joint would fail. And for the sake of saving a bit of weight, a bit of cash and a lot of work, I'm gonna go right over the top of this joint with my cloth.

Some pics as usual:

Significant update!

Here's the floor all glassed in and finished. Pictured is one of the new seats that I'll be installing. The entire interior will be reupholstered and carpeted in sand and blue.

Ok so, I decided to test some products on the scratched faded gelcoat. Keep in mind, this boat was only mildly oxidized, so your results may vary. But this is what I ended up with after 2x buff with wool commpounding pad and 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound, 1x buff with foam pad and Meguiars Swirl Remover 2.0, 1x DA polish with foam pad and Meguiars Swirl Remover 2.0, 1x DA polish with Meguiars #26 Yellow Carnauba Wax.

I did wetsand the high traffic areas where the boat had a lot of deep scratches. I used 800 grit and the Super Duty took it right out.

Thursday the uphostery starts! Getting there! Woo!

Hey! How did I manage to miss this project? Nice work there Pun. Especially the plywood/glass work and buffing the gel coat.

And (ahem..) I hope that was a Marine Grade brick you were using ... :D

Thanks for the compliments fellas. I'm three weeks from the water, in my estimation.

Yeah Mark, marine XL and epoxy resin with good high quality fiberglass tape and mat. That floor should outlast the rest of the boat anyway.

That is an Awsome job there Pun. Yes I approved the brick but prefer the landscape larger rocks they seem to work well. There are exactly 600 bricks in my backyard. :) Gotta love the seconds they look like they have been there for years the day you lay them. :)

Re: 16' Sunray Rehab

Well, while my boat is at the upholstery shop, I have some time to work on refinishing some of the componentry.

I don't have a before picture of the teak trim, but here are is a pic after much sanding and oiling. This teak was in terrible shape. In my search for replacement wood, I met an old man in a wood shop who suggested a little elbow grease might bring it back. He was right!

teak.jpg

Next I tackled the venturi vents. The vents are in bad shape. I looked for a replacement and found the exact ones, only they were black or white. I wanted to retain the chrome as it is part of the character of this old boat. Here's a side by side before and after. The formula? Rip off a piece of Nevr Dull and rub till it feels like your fingers are about to fall off.

The ones on the right haven't been polished yet, obviously. They turned out pretty good, but not perfect. There are some small cracks and chips here and there.Incidentally, if any of you know where I can find a replacement for these in chrome, please post it. They're low profile Detmar venturi vents for a 15 1/2" x 2 1/4" hole.

Re: 16' Sunray Rehab

Those footballs are in there for a reason and dont affect the integrity of the plywood in any way.
