I cant seem to find anything about using this zerk fitting for the gimbal bearing. The service manual says to fill seasonally, but it also says to remove the drive when filling...?

Has anyone ever used the side mounted zerk to grease the gimbal bearing?

Of course, what is the problem?

The manual specifies to “remove the outdrive” to fill the bearing. I’ve never done it, I don’t know where the grease would vent out when pumping or when to stop pumping if it is like a sealed system. Do you fill it and squeeze the bellow or something to figure out when to stop?

I don't know how you would force all the old grease out as the instructions suggest. If you are not taking the drive off, I would just give it a few pumps while bumping the engine to turn the drive shaft. If you do decide to remove the drive, just replace the bearing with a new styled, sealed unit and you don't have to worry about it going forward.

While bumping the engine? Are you talking about just bumping the ignition to turn the engine over or put it in gear and give it a few bumps? Not sure how the gimbal functions, sorry.

The thought is to move the bearing around while injecting new grease. Without the drive off, there is no way to rotate it, so just starter bump the engine around a little bit. For safety keep the drive in Neutral, pull the kill switch to keep engine from firing up.

When you pull the drive you'll see a large unsealed bearing in the transom that supports the input shaft. As you pump grease in it will ooze out both sides of the bearing. Rotate a quarter turn for each couple of pumps. Then wipe off the excess grease. You should be pulling the drive annually anyway to grease the input shaft splines and the zerk fittings on the U-joints.
