Hey all, I had the lower unit swapped on my Merc 650 (1975-76) Now I don’t have reverse lock. Any thoughts? I didn’t do the swap but I can’t afford further bills on this so want to see if I can correct myself if possible.

Some lost or mispositioned the reverse lock cam on the lower unit shift shaft. Or they lost or left out the upper reverse lock cam that fits in the driveshaft housing above the lower cam.

Lower cam or similar;

Thanks. Here’s a pic of my
old one. Is this thing around the stub the upper reverse lock cam?

It looks broken (??)

EDIT; I found this. Assuming mine is just worn.

Your cam looks OK. Do you have the reverse lock rod, that rides on it? They are adjustable to hook the tilt rod.

Looks OK to to me, too.

I assume you have the rev. lock rod since rev. lock was lost during the lower unit swap. Try F-N-R to see if the motor locks in any gear.

Often the lower cam is in the wrong orientation, it will lock in forward and in neutral and not in reverse. I don't have a good picture of the cam position for a 650.

Thanks guys. I was hoping to have time to drop the lower unit tonight. I don’t have anything but the lower unit as you see it.

i’m hoping it’s just a mispositioned lower cam. Will keep you posted thanks for your help
