I replaced my 1989 40 HP with a 2007 50 HP 2 stroke. Kept my controls but the throttle cable end seems too long. Did Yamaha reverse the push/pull direction between those years?

Both models are push to open type.

Is it a secret what model motor you have?

Alright figured it out.

703 control throttle cables pulled in before 2006, then they switched to push out. There is a sticker on the bottom of control box designating which you have. You can modify/convert them with a little work though. Involves grinding down 2 pressed in fittings, floping them around, then drill & tap back together.

here is the totorial I used.

back in business.... for now

Not exactly. Some models are push to open and some models are pull to open. Generally the smaller HP motors are pull to open and the bigger models are push to open. That is why the control box can be reconfigured. It has nothing to do with the year of manufacture.

Gotcha, that makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying.
