I probably already know the answer, but no harm in asking.

I need a new windshield (frame and all) for my 1964 Glassmaster. It is a single piece, wrap around design. Does anyone have anything close? Or even a frame that I can have a local shop form the plexiglass to?

Thanks in advance

Re: need a windshield

WOW... I am not sure of my model. I will check the hull tag and see what it says. All I know about for now is that it is a 1964 Glassmaster runabout 16' 110 HP IO. The front deck is closed and the original winshield is one piece. There is not much contour to the deck, a slight concavity (bows upwards), probably about 5 feet across and 18" in height.

Even if your friends is close to what I need, I would be interested in maybe making it work. It would definetly be better that what I got now

thanks!

Ethan

Re: need a windshield

Hey Mark,

THanks for the tip, The late owner replacedf the entire frame with one a neighbor gave him and they had to 'modify' it to fix.

But, I didn't know about Taylor Made, I will search for them and probably spring for the big bucks on this item... maybe save some money on patching the holes (kidding)

My boat will hopefully look a lot like yours.... right now the blue looks more like a chalkboard though

So close... yet so far!

Thank you very much for looking in to it anyways. I greatly appreciate your efforts

Was the boat a glassmaster anyways? I would love to see pictures and if it had other parts I may be interested in

Re: need a windshield

Hi Mark,

I have actually spent a lot of time on your site. Our boats are similar vintage, construction (lapstrake, V hull, runabout) and even color. Unfortunately for my boat, the gelcoat is actually worn down to black (which I am assumming is the base fiberglass) in several spots. I am thinking that I will use scotchbrite and 400 wetsand on it, fill extra holes and fix cracks and then paint. I am choosing paint over re-gelcoat based on reviews that I have read here. Since I am looking at just the deck, I figured I would paint. The hull is in great shape and I will follow your procedure on bringing that back to pristine

Would you if I emailed you with questions time to time? How do you post pics here? I can't figure it out

Eggkr8,

Painting sounds like the way to go for your situation.

To post pictures, get a picture hosting website like Photobucket.com. They are good because they allow direct links to the picture. Places like Geocities does not allow direct links and therefore they force you to go to Geocities to see the picture.

Once you have a host site, then you use the UBB code (see on left of Quick Reply) and use the commands listed there. The IMG command will put the picture right in the message, the URL will show the link so it can be clicked on. Click on "UBB Code is enabled" for instructions. Avatars are just small JPG pictures 100x100 pixles or smaller (forum rules) that has its URL specified in your profile. Use something like Adobe Photoshop to shrink the photo without loosing registration.

Write to me at mjmullen4@yahoo.com

Egg,
You can always just ask your ultra-nerdy computer geek friend, Will, to post the pictures for you. (or show you how to upload them to your isp-provided web page and link to them).

Re: need a windshield

Hey Will
Just trying to not bug you with thinfs I should know

I just tuned the engine today.... VERY nice! I can't get her to run smooth on the low idle, so I will double check points tomorrow and I decided to rebuild the carb. It is looking very moist around the gaskets and that could contribute to the poor idle. Once it is at 1k RPm it is VERy sweet

Mark42,
What thickness lexan did you use? Does it need the top support to to stay rigid?
Bill P.

Re: need a windshield

Bill,
It is 1/8" thick. Much more than that and you will have difficulty bending it alone. In my case, I re-used the frame so it was supported all around. The slight curve and rounded sides make for a rigid windshield. But you can still get it to flex if you press in the middle.

Eggkr8, glad to hear your engine is coming along. That is a major savings in cash outlay for a new one.

Get some pictures posted!

Mark

Re: need a windshield

She really ran great after the tune up, I was psyched. I just had to look at the key and she would run for me!

Then today I called a parts supplier today to order gaskets and hoses for the cooling systems and the carb rebuild kit. The first thing he suggested was buying a new engine (after me mentioning that it was a 1964 Mercruiser 110)! I finally convinced him to at least look up my parts and let me know what was stock.

I haven't mentioned the supplier, I will give them a few days to reverse their customer service before I trash their name anywhere. I fax'ed him my list (with their own part numbers included)

I may just go back to NAPA (where I got the tune up stuff), they were actually pretty good

Re: need a windshield

Hi Mark,

Thanks for asking. I ran around to two shops on Saturday to pick up all the parts I had on Order. NAPA did VERY well by me for finding my Carb rebuild kit, it came with everthing except for the float. I also am lucky enough to live about 35 minutes away from Doug Russell Marine (www.dougrussell.com). Jeffery over there found most of the parts I need, some more coming in on Tuesday. I hope to start pulling parts tonight (yes, I will take pictures first. What I am doing is pulling the water elbow, thermostat neck, replacing all those gaskets, hoses and claening the parts. New water pump while I am in there (it is leaking anyways and looks like an automotive one was put on it). I am also pulling the carb, intake and exhausts. More cleaning and new gaskets..

Then run it, pull the valve cover, adjust valves, new valve cover gasket (more cleaning). THEN I can winterize and pull the outdrive

I am enjoying ever second of it

Re: need a windshield

I'm really jealous that you have time for your project here. It sounds like you're really taking pride in it, and I'm away from home right now. When I get back, though, that poor boat is going to be begging for a break. Anyway, I wanted to comment on your comment about the service dealer you went to automatically wanting to sell you a new engine. Geez, I understand that they are trying to make money, but is there not something to be said for the repeat business you get when you do the right thing for someone? Some of these older motors can be great runners. I've got an old 160 Merc. I/O on one of my boats. Got the whole boat for 300 bucks, went home and it started right up on gas that had been sitting in it for 3 years. I wouldn't trade some of those old motors in for anyone. Anyway, I'm not really adding anything to the topic here, but just making a quick point. Good luck with your project, Egg

Re: need a windshield

Thanks for the well wishes Swimmin'. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt that was an attempt at humor. They were helpful there after.

Oddly enough, my boat was also $300. I have always been a gearhead and love old machinery (heck I was born in 1971 and my first car was 5 years older than me!)

We will see how successful I am. I bet a lot o people come and go from these forums with similar projects that shortly become lawn ornaments for several years. I am fighting that from happening! Shooting for a July 4th completion!

Cheers
e

Re: need a windshield

I hear you, Egg. I'm trying hard not to let mine become a hood ornament. In the Navy, and away at sea for a few more months, but I've been studying a lot. I guess it's just in the nature of some people to require a project at all times. Consider it genetic. :)
