1980 5.7 260hp manual

I am looking for a manual that built this engine in 1980. Not an owners manual or a Selok manual but a manual that will list correct wiring size and color along with connectors and routing

You won't be finding a manual like that. A service manual has wiring diagrams with colors, but not wire sizes or routing.

There have been several prior owners of this boat before me. It appears that alot wires were installed just to get power or a ground to something. A single run of wire can have up to 3 sizes and colors. I am a little worried of a possible fire starting from the improper sized wiring connected together. I would like access to a service manual if possible as you stated above to correct the wiring sizes and routing. The engine bay, outdrive, tilt mechanism and associated wiring up to and including the dashboard and gauges would be a ton of help. Basically I would like to put it back to original specifications. Thank you. The seloc manual I have is too generic and covers too many applications.

Well,then start by removing everything that doseant look like it belongs there. The oem harness from dash to engine plug os taped closed so that should be intact, the trim harness is 4 wires . trim/tilt wiring just goes to the control handel in most cases

What was stated above was that a manual with routing and sizes DOES NOT exist. What does exist is the factory manual with wiring diagrams showing point to point, and colour.

Also stated above is the best method to accomplish what you are after. BT also posted the necessary diagrams, from the factory manual, so you don't have to buy a manual yourself.

If you also need the dash gauge diagram, let us know if you have an ammeter or a voltmeter and we can post that too.

For wire size / gauge I would suggest using an ampacity chart for dc and matching that to the fuse size // Many good charts are available on the web and via electronics books.

In other words all wires should be rated to carry as much or more than the fuse of the ckt they are on.

All well and good Scott Danforth , but what about the wire size and routing? You missed all that...

assuming stock motor and stock alternator

red lead from alternator to starter - 6 gauge
16 gauge for most everything else
10 gauge for trim/tilt

If you are intending to rewire the boat you can buy harnesses that are already made up. It's a lot easier and cheaper than sourcing a bunch of proper sized and tinned marine wire which you will then have to attach ends to and loom up yourself.
