1984 johnson 70hp using newer water pump kit?

hey folks, i have a parts anomaly question where i think the sierra info on this site may be wrong.

i have a 1984 long leg 3 cylinder 70hp johnson.

brp/evinrude lists the water pump kit for this as p/n 438602 for this motor

brp/evinrude lists a different kit, 432955 for 1986+ years

here's the thing, multiple websites including this one list a single sierra kit 18-3899 for 70hp 3 cyl for all years. but if i look at the actual sierra catalog on their website it shows it as replacing the 1986+ evinrude p/n.

so evinrude specifies two kits but the sierra may or may not replace both.

i don't want to order the sierra kit and get burned.

i am shipping no matter what i do. the correct oem part is over $100 here in canada plus shipping. i can get the later oem kit or the sierra part for much less.

I dont like the sierra stuff unless it's the only option.

racerone has these 49ci motors down to a science. Maybe he will chime in and steer you right...

I think there was a vertical shaft diameter change or something in that time frame, cqnt remember, he will know.

The 955 kit is for the 56 cube newer blocks.-----Contains updates for cooling system.-----That kit is not needed for the 84 model.--------Sierra parts lists do have mistakes.-----I only use factory impellers.-----Water pump impellers are all black , but they are not " all the same " in my opinion.

do you mean it has extra parts not needed, or that it is not usable? i can get the oem 955 kit for less.
