distributor question

I have a Mercruiser 305MIE inboard, reverse (clockwise) rotation. I can’t get clear whether I need a reverse rotation (CW) distributor or a standard (CCW) rotation. Reverse rotation distributors are more expensive so that’s an added incentive to ask.

On various boating sites, I see statements like “all Chevy distributors turn clockwise”, but that clearly seems to be inaccurate as some Chevy small block marine distributors refer to standard rotation in their specs, and some to reverse rotation. And in any case, not all Chevy small block marine engines are standard rotation (mine is not).

So does my reverse rotation SBC engine require a reverse rotation distributor?

Thanks.

only the crankshaft turns opposite, dist is standard rotation
If your looking at the flywheel and it rotates to the left, you have a standard rotation motor. to the right and you have a reverse rotation motor. Looking at the front of the motor, pullys turn right ,its a standard motor. pullys turn to the left ,its a reverse rotation motor

It's a reverse rotation motor (RH -- clockwise). You saying the distributor turns CCW -- standard rotation? Thanks.

Note the direction of rotation of the distributor. (from the Merc manual for your engine, I think. You didn't give us a serial number, so I'm only able to rough guess.)

Serial number is 5582293. model number is 3228Q. 228 305MIE.

The distributor I am considering is Sierra 18-5498-1, which is reverse rotation. A Petronix version is cheaper (reverse rotation), and standard rotation models are cheaper and more plentiful.

Thanks for the feedback.

You need a standard rotation distributor. Just make sure you get the leads to the correct plugs...
