1993 60hp Evinrude “no spark??”

Hi, I’ve recently purchased a 1972 Cruise Craft Rogue and it’s running a 1993 60hp 3cyl. 2 stroke Evinrude. Engine model number is BE60TLETD.

When I purchased the boat a week ago it was running but now it cranks over but won’t start up. It’s not a fuel issue it’s 100% a spark issue. I’ve had an auto electrician have a look at it and he checked over all the plugs and connections, fuses, safety switches, key ignition etc etc and can’t find any issues and thinks it’ll either be the power pack, stator or something of the like. Plugs are new and coil packs seem fine, I’m getting no spark at any of the cylinders.

Does anyone have any ideas, or able to tell me the procedure in diagnosing the power pack, stator and trigger? Driving me insane...

Thank you, Dan.

Have the battery load tested.----A free service at many places.

Make sure the kill switch is in the right place. Still no spark?

locate the amphenol connector at the power pack that has the blk/yel wire. Disconnect just the blk/yel wire. Do you now have spark?

if so test key switch and kill switch as detailed in the sticky at top of page.

If no, get a peak reading voltmeter or dva adapter and post back.

Hey mate, so which kill switch are you talking? It has a kill switch on the battery but when that’s disconnected it doesn’t crank over, so I think it’s only ever “on” or “off”. There’s also the lever besides the gear selector/throttle (idle up lever I believe) but still no spark wether or not it’s up or down.

Tried removing the black and yellow wire, still no spark.

Ive got a peak reading voltmeter, what should I check?

Thanks for your indepth reply!

With your peak reading voltmeter fo fo cdielectronics.com and use their free trouble shooting guide. Test stator, sensor coils, well just follow their directions. Easy peasy...easier than I typing it all in

Ok so this is where I’m at, I believe the timer base is my problem but want a second opinion. When I check for resistance (OHM’s) at the 5 pin plug coming from the timer base I’m getting no reading. Checking from white wire to green/blue/purple my multi meter just reads 0L. I’ve also tried using my analog ohms meter which also reads the same.

When I use my multi meter to check resistance on the power pack and stator I’m getting the correct readings so I know my meter is reading correctly.

Even reading between the white wire and the black/white wire (QuickStart) I still get no resistance.

Just seems crazy that all readings are the same??

Turns out I don’t have a DVA or Peak Reading meter but when I did the voltage checks coming from the stator that all checks out as per the specs on the CDI troubleshooting page and my Seloc Manual. But when I check for voltage coming from the timer base I get nothing. My fluke meter is a true RMS meter and good for 0.1v to 600v so I’m sure it’d pick up something even if it’s not 100% correct. Anyway I’ve tried attaching photos of my meters so you can see them but photos are too large to upload, but my fluke meter is a 324 model and the analog meter is a Kyoritsu Insulation/Continuity tester model 3132A if anyone wanted to check them out.

so yeah, thoughts anyone?

Sorry, wish I could offer help but I only know how to do it with the proper equipment. Someone else may know

It does sound like you have a broken white wire from the timer base though

Yeah I’m about to remove flywheel and have a better look. All the YouTube videos I’ve watched all check timer with Ohms and get some sort of resistance. I’m getting none so fingers crossed it’s the timer!
