While I dont agree that is an upgrade ...
Throwing out a 100 years old, inefficient, trouble prone system to put in a modern electronic replacement 'not an upgrade'? Are you Amish?
Points... Burn, wear, glaze and are generally unreliable. You have to replace them every year, which also means resetting the timing. Yes, you can replace them on the water. And with a system that prone to problems, you better learn how to do it, fast.
Electronics... Set up and forget. No replacement necessary, timing doesn't drift with age, spark plugs last longer, faster starts, smoother running. If you're concerned about a failure leaving you stranded, throw a spare module in the kit. Just as easy to replace as a set of points.
I've had 'non points' in my boat since about 1994. The current engine is MPI, previous had Thunderbolt IV. In 24 years I haven't had a problem caused by the electronics. I've had 2 ignition problems, a leaky coil and a bad distributor ground, neither of which left me dead in the water. But I know a points system wouldn't have been able to cope as well with those problems and would have left me stranded. The original engine had points on a 165... Nothing but trouble. All the things I mentioned above...
The best upgrade anyone can do, ditch those troublesome points!
Chris....
