hi guys,

rebuilding the carb on my 1979 mercury 454. Motor is MIE 330 and serial number is 5226400, carb has a tag on it wit “MIE 330” and “1347-7366”. The kit came wit 2 throttle body gaskets. One is a standard four hole gasket and the other is essentially the same BUT has 2 slots between the primary and secondary bores. Two main questions: what one do I use? And what is the purpose for the slots.

Thanks!

Which of the two is the same as the old gasket? Are the slots Primary to Primary, and Secondary to Secondary, or Primary to Secondary?

The previous where not slotted but who knows who did it last. Slots are from primary to secondary. What I could find stated that it was for one of two things: marine application or higher heat car engines.

Here is the link to the kit, or at least a similar kit. It the two almost identical gaskets on the bottom. The one in the middle has the slots.

you use the one that matches the intake. if your intake has 4 holes, you use a gasket with 4 holes. if your intake uses 2 slots, you use the gasket with 2 slots.

You could also go on the Cliff Ruggles Quadrajet site and ask on their forum.

Merc dealer said to us the non slotted gasket. Slotted has something to do with hot running engines. Not exactly sure.
