Carb needle packings Q ....

I think I got my carb kit in..... but I noticed they only gave me 1 packing squishy thing for the needle packing---
and what they did give me was way too big. So I got creative and tried using some fuel injection O-Rings.
(1/4 by 3/8 by 1/16) They may seal OK but I wont be able to tighten up the gland like if it was the proper material.

Are there alternative packing materials ? Like water pump packing cord/string ?

Also---- on the adjustment that has the little threaded aluminum cylinder on the stem---- I only put an o-ring
on the outer side of the cylinder ….. should it have a seal on both sides ?
I couldn't turn the aluminum cylinder on the shaft with my fingers---- so what the heck is it doing? If I turn the
inner shaft the tip of the needle wont be moving in or out..... Is the cylinder supposed to remain stationary when you turn
the inner shaft ?

the picture in the carb kit was pretty much useless...…. and too generic anyway.

Get the propper packing. Orings wont work

I used the sierra kit for my motor model---- maybe faucet packing of the proper ID and OD ?
sierra kit had no correct sized packing...….

I've tried o-rings. The rubber has too much friction, making the needle hard to turn. I've also tried Teflon tape..no good. I've also tried gasket material. That's what comes in the kit. Sort of OK. I've also tried several turns of cotton string. Sort of OK. I've also tried punching some out of a leather belt. Works well but hard to make.

You gotta get that aluminum ring freed up on the needle so it turns easy. No other way.

Agreed-----Get that " aluminum cylinder " freed up.----No point in assembling if that is not easy to turn with your fingers.

I guess nothing wrong with the kit except for no packing for the needles.
Yes-- I kind of guessed that the cylinder must be threaded and when you turn the outer lever-- you must be turning
the inner piece IN the cylinder--- otherwise no needle in/out.
I might try a making a couple of layers out of some leather for packing. Maybe punch the center hole--- thread it onto
a bolt--- put it in the lathe and grind down the outer diameter to 3/8. Could do a stack of them at one time.
Then maybe massage in some silicone grease into the leather. (or soak them in some liquid silicone waterproofing
made for shoes...) That might help it make good seal under compression and still have it turn with a slight drag.

PS--- if the aluminum cylinder stays put while the central shaft turns--- then I prob need a leather seal on either side
of the cylinder so its both trapped and sealed. does that sound right ?

Tonight I made new correctly sized packing out of leather. Cut a 1/4 hole in the center. Then threaded them onto a 1/4 inch bolt. Made 2 threaded cylinders to squeeze it tight in compression. Then stuck it in the lather and cut the leather down flush with the cylinders. (3/8) ---- so I got 4 perfectly concentric and sized leather packings. Soaking them overnight in full
synthetic gear oil.

Next I will get aluminum cylinder loosened up and put in the packings. That should allow it to run-- IF -- I didn't make any mistakes inside the carb.

Still have to straighten out the Bendix mech. on the starter.

the tool made the leather seals nicely. They went in nice and seem to have the right amount of give. Next I either
have to change starters or figure out why mr. Bendix is locking up.
Blasting and painting the intake muffler and face plate.
