1976 Merc 650 fuel line - doesn’t look right

before and after shots of a replacement fitting. The new one doesn’t have much exposed hose to flex. Looks bad installed. I’m afraid this silly little $45 part will fail prematurely.

Thoughts?

Oh, and what’s the little golden brown pouch for? I’m afraid to touch it. Everything is crumbling on this motor

Wild guess time but I think maybe that pouch held the rope and handle for pull starting the motor. The 850 had a pouch that looked just like that inside of the front cover for the rope but the 650 may not have had enough room with the shorter block and cover.

Well the hose looks too long, possibly the wrong hose? Or the ends need to be screwed further in to the fitting. You might need to use less Teflon Tape, in fact get rid of it and just a wee bit of pipe dope. Teflon tape in the connector can break loose and wreck all sorts of havoc in the carbs

Many motors came with pull cord in a pouch at one time.

Interesting on the Teflon/carb issue. I never considered that. I just treated it as I would have if it was pneumatics etc. I will remove and re-do.

But as as for the other, this part is exactly the same length and angle. The only difference is the sizes of the collars. They are too long which don’t allow the right flex.

What do you guys think about leaving one bolt out of the part to the right (filter?) which will allow more tilt and a straight line coupling. This is a poor design from the start

Is it a genuine Mercury part? If it the same length, then it is a fitment issue. Looking at the pic of the original hose, it doesn't look like it is flexed, the new one just needs to be deeper in the fittings

Quicksilver. I think that’s aftermarket mercury parts specialist MFG. right?
parts are the same length. Different length hose collars (or whatever you call them)

Quicksilver is a Mercury Brand, usually for retailers that are not Mercury Dealers.
If the Overall length is the same, then it is likely it wasn't turned in to the fittings as far as the original was.
