So I’ve decided to give the special Campion Chase a rest. She was getting used far too often. Fancied a wee overnight or two also, since my wee daughter is now of an age to do so.
I finally sealed the deal on a boat I’d admired for years, all be it older models and usually with a big V6 2 stroke or the more common 4.3 and alpha fitted.
She is a Fletcher 19 GTO Sportscruiser. Most from the other end of the Atlantic won’t be too familiar with the brand, but all in Europe will be. Well known for their rare combination ability to be both quick and good in the rough. A rare combination.
She is fitted with a 2016 efi 115hp on the transom. I am still in shock with how good not only the hull is, but how good the 4 stroke outboard is these days. Incredible on fuel, only a couple of kgs heavier than the 2 stroke version and so easy to service. The economy is literally ridiculous. And for pushing a heavy deep v hull, still manages 43 mph gps with a tempest plus prop.
Don’t tell anyone but I might be a convert to the new regime haha.

Be honest....how many times have you tried to start the motor when it was already running?

I do it at least once a trip when running someone else's boat.

Dingbat...funny you should mention. Honest to god...for the first few outings when coming into dock or manoeuvre at slow speeds I had to ask her to check it was still running and not cut out. I got wise to it now though. Just have a quick peek at the tachometer haha. Amazing things.

Didnt realize they still sold mariners.

Yeah. Literally just a mercury with a mariners decals. Great engine by all accounts and many have thousands of hours on them commercially. Amazing 2100 cc and no more nasty cam timing belt to break. Chain driven and efi fuel system. I’m still blown away by its consumption or lack of it. The other boat is a crazy quick boat with a V8 MPI. I was amazed at how good that is on fuel when cruising, but this is something else. It will use about 11/12 litres an hour cruising at just over 20 mph. 1.5 miles for a litre of fuel at that. Amazing. And that’s with a prop that’s a couple of inches too small on pitch. Going up to a 21” ASAP.

I have to watch the tach to see when mine starts! You can feel a slight vibration when you're by yourself in calm conditions, but that's just about it!

Yes, you certainly do use the tach for more than just prop selection with a 4 stroke!
