Just got my 1985 Sea Ray back from getting her ready to ride this summer. While on the water hose and running, I very soon started smelling something like rubber burning, then some smoke coming from the rear of the engine. I turned it off immediately. Temp was 175, which it never gets that warm on the hose. I checked the outdrive for circulation with the water hose on. I did not see water coming out from the normal place but it was coming up from the water impeller area specifically from a round hole behind a stainless nut located in the front middle of the housing. I think maybe that the water pickup pipe was not connected. It's going back to the mechanic Monday but I want a heads up as to what it could be. This mechanic has messed up before and did not stand good for his mistake costing me $700.
Thanks,

if the mechanic just replaced the pump, then he/she may be on the hook. if not, then you may be paying for this.

the rubber you were smelling was your exhaust hoses and flapper melting because of zero water flow

or the coupler went which would require pulling the drive and motor

you do pull the drive every year to check the alignment, correct?

I don't live on a lake anymore so my boat goes out about 4 times a year. Two years went by without any trouble so I took it in to have the impeller replaced routinely. He changed the outdrive oil and impeller. I brought it home a few weeks ago. This is the first time I pulled it out since then. It cranked up and ran before I took it to him. I don't have the energy anymore to be doing big projects anymore. Thanks.

Probably, I paid him $275 for this work so I will take it back for him to tell me what is wrong. If I'm not happy with what he tells me I'll need to take it away from his place!

Actually after the last time he worked on it the large exhaust hose slipped off (going to the outdrive). I took it back to him and he said that does not matter, all it does is divert the exhaust through the prop. So I drove it for two summers with it off.
