I'm new to owning a boat and could use some help. The motor itself runs good but while cruising the rpms will shoot up and I'll loose speed. If I slow down completely and give it throttle it will go back to normal speed. This has happened a few times lastnight on the lake and the only thing I can think of is the propeller ? The motor is a 2001 merc 75hp 2 stroke on a 20ft pontoon.

Sounds like you nailed it. You must have a rubber hub and it's slipping. You can mark the propeller with a line perpendicular to the prop shaft from the brass inner tube to the outer shell of the prop. Run it and then check the line. If no longer aligned you have a spun hub.

Thanks for the fast reply. So when you say hub you mean propeller ? Theres a rubber that's pressed into the propeller with splines and its worn out ? I just read that somewhere lol
