So this isn't a simple question or is it?

Picked this boat and outboard up this past winter, only saw run on all 6 in the parking lot. Engine looked good, sounded good and the price was right. In April tried running the engine and the shift seal was swelled and wouldn't go into gear. No big deal I wanted to replace the water pump anyway. All good now. Tried running for an extended period of time in the drive and went well for a few minutes then started loading up and noticed gas coming out around the bottom of the bonnet. So ok, boat sat and I knew that so I figured carbs are dirty. Tried to find kits with floats etc. and couldn't get them in less then a month. So I did what nobody should ever do, I bought "rebuilt" carbs on ebay. They looked great and figured awesome ... So these carbs did exactly what the originals are doing and that is flooding. The two middle carbs are throwing gas out when I pump the fuel bulb.

Ok, strange, both sets of carbs doing exactly the same thing. So I pulled one off and looked at the float and needle, all looked like it was replaced. Tried setting the float level slightly down (or up depending on your view) so it would close off sooner. Didn't help. From what I read the float level should be level with the top now this is slightly slanted up, closing off sooner.

So now I am really confused. Set the floats higher? The other ones are set level. Can anything else cause cause this? Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Orlando

Check the primer. It has a manual lever in addition to the choke button. This lever can be set to dump raw fuel into the throttle body for cold start purposes.

BTW - carb kits are readily available. Not sure what your issue was.

No local stock and shipping lead time was almost a month because of COVID19.

So here comes the embarrassing part ... YOU ARE 100% CORRECT. I did not know about this and the lever was set half way at 3 o'clock. Thought that setting was just how much fuel was delivered with the prime. Thank you very much Chris!

This is my first large HP outboard as my background is in gas and diesel engines. This was an expensive learning experience I will never forget but at least now I know the a lot more about this engine. Time to go fishing!
