Can this be done on a 1976 Evinrude 15hp. Since it has the driver coil? Thx

Is that the model with the strange firing order (points close at the same time....)? That aside, if the atom modules are connected to the coils the same way as the original factory connections, it seems to me it could work. Presumably, that would be through the charge coil.

Maybe the other option is to find a mag plate for a traditional magneto from the '50s or '60s, and use that with a fresh set of under flywheel coils.

I was just curious as I saw this on Leeroy’s Ramblings. And I’ve also read that the 74-76 ignition was the worst of those years..

True on the atom ones. Looks like there’s a new type out there but they don’t fit under the flywheel. So it’s probably not worth trying.

The Nova II is a popular ignition modification in the lawnmower world. So popular that Stens, Rotary and Oregon all make their own copy. and you can pick up a couple chips for less than $20

However it's pretty well known that the voltage spikes caused by the OMC coils fry the Nova II modules.

Now Briggs and Stratton has made a conversion kit that snaps onto their coils since the 80's. They are out of favor now due to the pre converted coils being standard. But that is the same type of transistor. it ~may~ last like an Atom, and you would need to figure out how to mount 2 of them. The kit is about $20 each IIIRC

Convert your motor to the 77 and newer ignition. It is waaaaay more.reliable than the atom modules. The older style magneto will not work on your.motor.

You could make one yourself if you totally understood how the ignition works. Then a trigger point that gates an SCR would be an idea. Just fuel for the ever burning fire...
