84’ 50hp starting issue.

Hi, first-time boat owner here!
I have a Mercury 50hp 2 stroke 4cyl that runs great all day then after sitting overnight iI can’t get it to start. It will crank and crank but no signs of starting.

I will park the unit for the week with the cowl off and spark plugs out. The following weekend the motor will fire right up. But, again I use the boat for the day, dock it overnight and nothing the next day...

I feel the unit runs to well to be a carb issue as when it’s running its performing at 100%. When chatting with people I get anything from rebuild both carbs to replace the stator.

I did replace the fuel and plugs but have not tested for spark when the issue is going on...

This is NOT electrical.

I would get a fuel pump rebuild kit and install it, easy, cheap, and needs
to be done every 20 years as the parts inside deteriorate.


As the diaphram wears out, it tears, and leaks fuel back into the crankcase, where it pools in the bottom and causes a flooded condition.

At the very least, open up the pump and inspect diaphram for tears or holes, but if you are going that far, might as well rebuild it.

Let us know what you find.
