So old set up was high hour carbureted 5.0 and alpha 1 out drive with 1.62 gears. The new set up is new 350 mag mpi and a new alpha 1 with suggested 1.47 gears..
So i put the old prop on the new setup with is a 4 blade stainless 14.25'' and 17pitch
During a shake down run on Sunday my top speed was 33mph at about 3800rpm at WOT. New engine needs about 5000rpms at wot. Very sluggish to get up on plain. i figured i would be under proped but this is all i had.
This is a ocean boat and i carry a lot of gear (fuel, ice, lead ect) 2001 23' bayliner trophy.
Im not to concerned about mph, 30-35 is plenty. i do need more lower end control easy out of the hole and better control in big sea's.
Any suggestions would be great. im going to stop by a local boat shop on the way home tonight and pick there brains also

Thanks again, Mike

Can you put the old ratio drive back on?
The 350 mpi has more HP but with that heavy of a boat, the prop would be the first to change before the drive.

Having a 17-4blade is equal to 19-3blade. Could try a 17-3b but would look for a 15-3b

I’m not sure there is a prop of 11” pitch that would go on that alpha. Might be wrong.

Ah. Faye play. Looks like an evertia eco. You’d imagine that would too small a pitch by a couple inches. The big blade diameter will help counter that, but I’d normally have money on that being too small a pitch and bouncing off the rpm limiter easily perhaps.
Were your trim tabs left down and drive trimmed way down on test run ?

Ok guys headed out this morning to test. Engine ran real nice and strong im supper happy with how it all came out. So WOT would run a little over the 5000rpm max, I didnt run it up but would have prob went to 5300-5400. I love the low end power and control, being a ocean boat and fishing in big sea it will be nice to have the bump when i need it. I dont thing im going to change anything. Top speed at 4800rpm was about 32mph and that is plenty. Keep in mind this was a empty boat today just the wife and I. normally carry 4 people , lots more gear and ice. Thanks for everyone's help !!
