Can't find an OE manual for 1984 90 hp v4. J 90 TLCRD. Will an '85 manual work?

I really don't like Clymer or Seloc manuals. My trusty OE service manual for my '89 60hp has gotten me through some serious issues. Like a salt water submersion followed by a total overhaul. The listing shows a book with an '84 print date, but the INTRODUCES code proves the book is for an '85.

90 MODELS
E90MLCO E90TLCO E90TXCO J90MLCO **J90TLCO** J90TXCO

The price is a little steep, but I've spent a good bit of time looking for an '84 manual for my engine and have yet to find one. This one should work, right? Thanks, Kevin

I've sent Ken Cook, the original publisher, an email. Hopefully they can help.

I ordered the OEM manual through the dealer when I purchased my 84 9.9. The manual I got is not hp specific, it's a binder with several sections that covers all motors OMC made that year, from 2hp-V6.

Is there any difference between an '84 and an '85 90hp V twin crossflow? Because in '84 J/E offered a whopping manual that spanned 2 thru 235hp models. It is available at Ken Cook, the original publisher for $125. But in '85, just one year later they changed the manual format and brought the size as well as price down to a 2 thru V-6 model OE repair manual that can still be had at Ken Cook for $75 new. A $50 difference. I would be $50 ahead if the '85 manual will work. I would rather drink a shot of Penzoil Synthetic Blue than use a non OE manual. A personal preference. I hear Quicksilver doesn't taste too bad either.

I finally found a bullet proof source. Ken Cook inc. The original publisher runs a website called outboardbooks.com. Thousands of OE Johnson Evinrude manuals. After further research, I learned that in '85 J/E changed over to the looper style engine. So it is going to be the expensive book after all. Thanks for the help tho.

Sorry but the 90 hp motors were not changed over to a looper style in 1985.----So your research is not complete !!

Just goes to prove that because someone printed and posted it, it's not necessarily true.

This was found on this website. https://www.glmmarine.com/HistoryJohnEvinV4.html

1985-1994 90 degree V4 Loopcharged Outboards

From 1985-1994 these outboards were commonly called the V4 "loopcharged" engines. When
the compact "60 degree" V4 engine was introduced in 1995 the 1985-1994 engines were called
the "90 degree" V4 loopcharged engines. Although manufactured from 1985-1998 they received
no significant design changes after 1995. The 90 degree V4 loopcharged engines have come in different horsepower ratings between the 120 hp (smallest) and 140 hp (largest).

The introduction of the loopcharged V4 in 1985 brought the Johnson/Evinrude "V" engines into the modern age of two-stroke engine technology.

There it was. The confusion comes from how they are listed and the break off dates between issues. The gentleman on
e-bay sent some pics of the thermostat and carbs in his book. From what I can gather, those are two easy visuals to separate the looper from crossflow. Thermostat and preformed hoses on the bottom, crossflow. Twin 2 barrel carbs, crossflow. Now that that's been dealt with, I can enjoy finishing it up. Thanks again.

Yes there is lots of wrong information out there !!----Lawnboy power mowers ( Johnson / Evinrude product ) were loop charged in the 1950's.----Lawnmowers do not idle when working to cut grass.----Give me a crossflow 115 HP any day , far better / smoother idling than that 120 HP ( bigger displacement ) looper style engine.
