Re: First big job 72 MFG

OHfishing, I am very interested in your project here, because I am the proud owner of the very same boat. I have owned the boat since 1981, and I am starting to think that I have the same job to do. The floor is starting to get soft under the drivers seat. I want to show you some pictures of my boat, but not to sure if I can add a picture in a reply. Best of luck to you on your rebuild, the boat will be good for another 34 years.

Tom

I still think this cardboard idea is for me... I will use the string idea to.. do the entire bulkhead & stringer system out of cardboard , then after i got it perfect cut out the lumber by tracing the cardboard

Ohfishing, How much water weight do you think you pulled out with the wet foam ? Just wondering how much extra weight it could be.

Hi Mark, I am located in Sayreville, about 5 minutes from the Raritan Bay. Great fishing there. Here are some pictures of my boat.

Nice! I have got to get to the Raritan Bay. My Uncle had a boat there and I remember it was really nice boating.

Capt tom, I cant even imaging how much weight was in there, but I will tell you that out of 7 total cans of debris, each can was so heavy I had trouble moving it to the curb, my trailer tires usually bulged now they are standing at attention... hundreds of pounds at the least. I have a question for you ...(nice boat btw) how fast does your boat go with that 115? My boat was going 39 mph with just me aboard with a 75 hp merc. I imagine now that I removed a ton of water i will do better than that ...i cant wait to find out. how fast are you going with the 115?

Re: First big job 72 MFG

Im at a crawl now, today I made the front bulkhead (the easiest one) and cut all 4 stringers to length ... the height still needs trimmed... this is the part I hate. I figured on getting it all cut out and fastened together before I sand and glass... so I guess it will be another late night

Re: First big job 72 MFG

i went back out and got alot done, I got all the pieces rough cut and layed them out in the boat, I need to do some fine cutting and grinding on it tommorow but it should be near perfect height for where the floor has to lay. I tacked it together with a few nails just to hold it so I could work on it, but they all have to come apart to be coated I also cut 1 section of floor to fit and it looks good. I will probably glue the floor to the stringers with liquid nails and stainless screws. The bulkheads are 3/4 and I doubled the front bulkhead with 2 pieces of 3/4 . I have cut pieces for adding an extra bulkhead in the boats center and I made the boats bilge (well) double size so I can access my bilge pump (before I couldnt reach down there) Im glad the stringers will be buried it looks like an autoworker cut them with a jig saw, but the boat will be solid. how much for foam?? . I think I could get away with 1 gallon

Re: First big job 72 MFG

Looking good, not sure how fast it goes but it is pretty fast. The reason I asked about the weight is about 2 years ago I asked a question on iboats about the max rpm's. I only get about 4500 max rpm on a new 13x19 prop. Since then I removed the tach with the intention of getting a new one, but did not get one yet. I know it should be getting 5500rpm's but the motor and speed seems fine and it still pretty much flies. It is a 1975 Johnson that has given 31 years of reliable service. It has never been rebuilt, and over the years the only parts replaced were the power pack, starter, water pump every 5 years, and last year I replaced the fuel pump. I also change the LU oil and plugs every season.

Mark, Now is the time to get to the Raritan Bay if you like fishing, they are cathing stripers and big blues right now.

Re: First big job 72 MFG

That "tube" running down the keel looks like a nice piece of keel reinforcement. Does that tube have holes so water can drain into it? Is the tube open to the bilge or drain plug on the outside of the transom? If not, you should take some time to decide how to perferate it so it can act as a drain. Also, if water gets in front of the wood bulkheads, it will not be able to drain either. It would seem that a few well placed 3/8" or 1/2" holes in the tube would let any water drain away to a rearward bilge where the bilge pump resides.

Excuse me if you already have this covered. Just something I thought should be pointed out.

It's looking great!

Re: First big job 72 MFG

Ken, not to far off from wooster ...Canfield / Austintown here, hey Ken being your from Ohio , join us here please Ohio Fishing Reoprts & Discussion we would be glad to have you. MARK The TUBE is very solid, it runs clear through the front bulkhead and runs clean back to the bilge pump in the very back of the boat, its an excellant drain and when I removed the floor I found the drain holes plugged with some sort of factory installed plugs. I dont know why the holes were plugged but they caused this damage im repairing. I have put much thought into the draining of water and think I have the perfect idea, Im going to install some through hull connecters in each section of the stringer system to allow the water to get into the tube ... thanks for the suggestion.. I have not got much done this week I was on an assembly line for the last 10 days for 12 hours per day (4 hours longer than usual) .... coming home to tired to work on the boat ... but its saturday and im putting my garden in and getting busy with the stringers. I hope to be ready for the glass work by sunday night and hope to het them glassed in by next weekend. Then add the dack, carpet and new seats .... I was planning on using the west system but found some cheaper materials, I was able to save over $700 by shopping elsewhere so with the money I saved I decided to get new seats... My logic was... new stringers, new floor , new carpet.... why put the same old ratty seats back in ... the boat will be cherry now ...

I'm no expert, but I do know a little about wood... I question the use of that chipboard and pine stringers in this application. Neither do well long term in wet conditions.

Not putting you down or anything like that. Hate to see all of your hard work go down the tubes in a couple of years.

Awesome boat and you're doing great!

You'll regret using that O.S.B ply in your floor though.

You'll never get it totally sealed and it will suck water like a sponge and swell up.

I love that boat. :)

Re: First big job 72 MFG

OHF, I've been following your project. Doing a great job up until I saw you added that dredded OSB board. Not a very good idea like a few others stated. Hate to see someone go that extra work to do it right and then cut a corner. You also should know from the old stuff you took out. OSB will not hold up.

5 years ago I installed CDX exterior plywood to cover my cabin floor (enclosed out of the weather). Yesterday I pulled up the carpet. One area (due to my fridge) was rotted out. I was a bit surprised that it rotted exterior CDX in that short of time. That was the only area that I cut a corner to save a buck. Thankfully I can patch that one area.

One thing I have learned from the great members here. They have been there and done that. Most will stress the importance of using marine grade materials. Now I have BTDT and will only use marine grade and rot resistant wood.

I live over by Mansfield, not far from you, so if you ever get over to Plesant Hill (where Newville was until they built the lake) look me up. My boat isn't ready yet, but hopefully by mid June.

Good Luck.........SS

I was planning on soaking the stuff in west marine boat resin, are you saying that even if I put multiple coats of resin on them they still wont work? ...

Re: First big job 72 MFG

Yep, OSB especially in that area will be prone to a compression force of the deck. You wasn't planning on using it as your deck material also were you? If so, it will be just a matter of a couple of years and you will be back at this.

edit: fir would be my choice of material for the pcs of OSB that your using.
