Re: First big job 72 MFG

Hey all, OH fishing, I have been following your project from the start and rarely interject into someones well intentioned and expert handy work! I own a small carpentry restoration buisness and have delt with the gamit of OSB/CDX etc debate for restoration work. Personnaly I do not use OSB for the simple fact that it is a glue based product. CDX is more than 85% wood. Marine plywood in my opinion is over priced but an excellent product under normal marine conditions. The last 3 decks that I have replaced in boats I have back primed and painted with a good commercial grade enamal paint all 6 sides! ( I use pine stringers?) This is a pain in the butt...the up side to it is you have a great boat and you obviously take great pride in your boat. You have gone this far and I would hate to see you do it 1/2 way and regret it in 2 years. If you store your boat outside year round as I do, I don't care what cover you buy or how hard you try to keep your boat moisture free once it gets wet it seems it takes weeks or months to really dry it out! Please reconsider your decsion to use OSB, by sealing it up you are locking moisture in....it is a natural caracterisic of the product. I can professionaly assure you that you will regret useing OSB. It is just my 2 cents and good luck. What a great boat keep up the redo it looks great!

I forgot something LOL Mark42 made a sugesstion to perferate the tube that runs down the middle for drainage....that tube is cardboard in the interior,(at least it was in my 73) I personnally would make sure that it is sealed at the least! Again just my 2 cents good luck and great Boat!

Re: First big job 72 MFG

When replacing the panel that covers up the transom area in my boat two years ago, I settled for something in between CDX and Marine grade. I wish I could remember the grade, but I believe it was fir, with exterior glue and one finished side. The counter man at the plywood supply said it had voids, but about 1/2 of what CDX has. It was a little more than half the cost of marine grade 4x8 sheet. I double coated it with West System all around, painted with polyurethane and one side (exposed) covered with a exterior/marine grade carpet.

I would consult with your local plywood supply and see if thet have something similar before putting down that OSB.

Re: First big job 72 MFG

:( I didnt plan on using that wood, I laid my stringers in and found some scrap cuts laying around that were a perfect fit (deck height) My plans were to take the stringer grid out , lay it on the floor and give it multiple coats of this stuff
boatersresin_f.jpg
Improved, professional quality finish resin that does not sag and cures to a hard and strong surface. Compression strength is 175% above that of the former Boatyard Resin formula!

Free flowing to fill cracks and gaps
Applies more easily than thick resins
Hardener included
I figured on using the whole gallon sealing the wood up then after it dries turn the stringers upside down and I was going to fiberglass the pieces to the stringers then put it in the boat then glass the deck to grid, leaving it encapsulated. I have to go to home depot and Im going to check into some alternative material. The boat never saw a night outside, but I know what you mean about the moisture. I definatly never want to see my hull ever again after this job so I may as well upgrade it. Dont tell my wife this but ... 5 gallons resin & hardner, 2 gallons floation foam $325 stringers & 3/4' deck $100 fiber cloth $60 new carpet $60 new seats $300 outboard repair $1-300 (guess) and im sure i will need more such as mixing supplies, clean up stuff, tools, I cant imagine restoring a 40 footer

OHF -

Something I would look into for sealing the wood are the products from www.rotdoctor.com - I have been very happy with their CPES Sealer on my transom core (2 layers of 3/4 marine ply glued together). As an experiment, I took a scrap piece of the core & some leftover sealer & saturated one side of it. I cut it in half, and it penetrated right through to the glue layer.

Also, for drainage, you should do a search here for "diappearing rope" before you pour foam (if your intention is to pour foam). The only reason why I didn't use this is because I didn't find this forum until after I had poured foam!

Good luck with the project!

Matt M

Last night I dis-assembled the stringers, I threw away the OSB, and got the stringers and bulkheads coated in boaters resin, this morning I went out and coated the reverse sides and later this evening I will give it all a double coat .... I will assemble it whn its properly dry and use something else in place of the OSB. (which will also be coated) I hope to be glassing in the stringers very soon

Re: First big job 72 MFG

just an update on my progress...I have 3 coats of resin on the stringers and deck parts. I have begun to sand (scuff up) the stringers and bulkheads and today my 4 gallons of resin arrived along with 2 gallons of a&b foam. I will begin the glassing this weekend and hope all goes well, I will post some updated pictures as I start this work

He shouldn't have to worry. The entire boat hull is made of polyester, and its been holding up well all these years.

Re: First big job 72 MFG

I used cedar for stringers. Home depot or any home center caries 5 1/4 by 6" by what ever lenth. I either run them through a jointer or square off the edges on a table saw. Cedar is sometimes a less dense wood but its rezilance to water is second to known. We used to utilize cypress in the day but that is big buck now. Just a thought.

Re: First big job 72 MFG

friday night I got all the wood sanded, I practiced using the cloth by glassing my wifes new flower boxes. After I got the basic idea on using the stuff I glassed the boards in place with some chopped mat between the board and the hull, I then started at the front and began glassing in the wood. I got all finished glassing in the stringers and Im fairly confident on the job, although it was the messiest work I ever did, that stuff is messy! I am just about ready to foam , but first I want to go in and cloth a few spots where I think it could be better. after that I can put the deck sections in and go fishing

Re: First big job 72 MFG

i finished glassing in the stringers and got most of the foam poured. its fairly easy to work with and in only a couple of spots i need to shave it where it foamed over the stringer. im confident I did a good job glassing and the boat is more solid than ever .. Im also over satisfied with the amount of resin I coated on the wood before i glassed it in, its SUPER coated and no bare wood exposed , very happy with the job so far, hoping the deck goes easy for me. before i had no structural support because everything was soggy since i owned the already wet boat.... so it should perform better on the water. . here is a shot of the foam.... dont mind the mess .... whatever floats my boat
foam1dc.jpg
I still have to glass on the support boards that the deck will sit on, then im ready to drop the deck in and glass it over. problem is im on 12 hours at work and have no time. my lawn is almost knee high and its raining on my only day off ... so this job drags on... but the end is in sight

My 1972 MFG Sprint

My 1972 MFG Sprint

Hi guys I was a member here a long time ago and decided to post the finished project I was working on

I bought a boat that was real pretty and the price was right, it appeared to be in awesome shape and I fished out of it with my wife for 2 or 3 years and never had a probelem

I did however notice when walking around the center of the floor had a soft spot, you know how the rest of the story went!

I tore out the carpet and saw that everything underneath was deystroyed!

Someone told me here at IBOATS a long time ago that a wet spot on the floor is the tip of the iceburg , he was right!

When I saw what was underneath the deck I was ashamed that I had my family on the boat!

The 35 year old flotation foam meant to save me was saturated, the stringers wers rotted and crumbling

It was my first time wirking with fiberglass and my first boat job but I decided to do it

I ripped out EVERYTHING down to bare hull, I put in new stringers coated multiple times with resin

I added WAY MORE floatation foam than the boat had in it. Im very confident this boat aint sinking , I really poured it in, also filled the hollow cavity under the bow ... this baby is floating!

Then I went nuts and decided to paint the boat & trailer and change all hardware on the trailer

I glassed in a new deck and added carpet & new seats and

The boat feels really sturdy now!

I guess I didnt realize it at the time but the boat WAS a wet noodle , now I can feel the difference, I picked up a couple MPH oddly after I went heavy on the foam, and it handles like a dream, very happy with the job even though it was my first time , im hoping this boat (garage kept) will last another 35 years

I was born in 73 and the boat was made in 72 ,
