I am looking at buying a 24' tritoon with a 2007 150hp optimax on the back with 280 hours. Previous owner states he had it serviced at 100hr, 200hrs, and the start of this season. The boat is well known by the mechanics at the marina for being well maintained. Awesome boat, very clean. Only time driven this year was from the launch to the dock where it's been sitting since June.

My concern came during the test drive. Owner states he usually maxes out around 27mph fully loaded (fridge, people) and had done that the year previous. Also stated to me to keep the RPM under 5500 when driving. When I was driving the boat with 4 others on board I was only able to get up to 17mph and only about 4900RPM. Trim up or down didn't change this much. I'm new to 2 stroke outboards, but my father-in-law thought it was a bit shaky, running rough. It didn't seem to bog down under throttle, but obvioulsy something is up if I can't hit top speed.

Owner is taking the boat to a mechanic to look into it, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on this matter. How reliable are 2007 Optis? Anything to look out for? Potential issues? Simple as spark plugs, Coils?

I appreciate all the help with my first boat purchase in advance.

Look at the factory parts diagrams.----Look for price of parts / availability.------Perhaps look at the air compressor condition.---Ask a few dealers if they like working on them.

A DFI motor is well beyond “simple as coils and spark plugs”.

The simplicity of a 2 stroke went out the window with the advent of direct injection.

Welcome to the world of injectors, high pressure pumps, secondary filters, vapor tanks, indexed spark plugs and $40 a gallon DFI 2 stroke oil....
