I have a 1995 Lowe 14' with a 30hp Evinrude. I've had the boat since Oct 2017. I started using it in 2019 and it always operated flawlessly. Evinrude E30ELE0B.

This year we have gone out 65 times since early June. From time to time I would have to turn the key 2 times to get the motor to start. In early July I purchased a new marine starting battery class 24. Specs below
  • Battery Electrolyte Composition:Acid
  • Battery End Type:Top Post
  • Battery Purpose:Starting Lighting Instrumentation
  • BCI Group Size:24
  • CCA at 0 degrees F:550
  • Contents:ONE EACH
  • Freight Class:65
  • MCA at 32 degrees F:675
  • Polarity:Left Positive
  • Reserve Capacity:90
  • Terminal Type:STUD/DIN
  • Volts:12
Recently I have been having a lot of starting issues. Almost to the point it won't start, or will take up to 6 turns of the key over about a 2 to 3 minute period.

Today I checked the battery and my marine charger said it was at 53%. I have fully charged the battery today and hope to get on the water to see if my problem has gone away.

I'm wondering if this 1995 motor with the same age starter just might be worn out (the starter), or is there an alternator that should be charging the battery when running that might be the problem???

The well respected local boat repair shop believes the brushes in the starter might need to ge cleaned or replaced and that should make all perfect again. I didn't think to check the battery until today to see what percent charged it was, so I'm wondering if that might be the true issue??

What do you think?

Thank you!

Check your charging system on the motor to make sure it's working.

Thank you! I'm not very mechanically inclined. Can you direct me to information on how to do that with this motor? Thanks again.

Normally I would suggest taking the starter apart for inspection , cleaning and new brushes ( $6.50 ) ----And very easy to learn how to do that service work on these starters.

You have one of those state-of-charge meters. Check the battery before running and note the charge level. Then check again with the motor running and see if the charge level changes. At 1000 rpm or so, the meter should show a change, and if running for a while should show the battery fully charged.

This will only indicate whether the charging system is functioning, not the actual state of the battery (will have a flash charge when you shut down the motor, but after a while will show about what it did before running the motor.)

Thank you Racerone! Would you be able to direct me to those parts and anything on cleaning too? Thanks again.
