i have an alpha 1 1989 model, the lip on the gimbal has a section broken off, about 1" long, has anyone come across this before? what did you do to resolve it? has anyone used the sierra 18-8311 gimbal repair kit? I am hesitant to do anyting since the broken lip is on the outside part of the releef

It can be welded. Can't be run with that chunk missing and keep water out of the bellows.

Was mine, I'd be hunting a FleaBay or Craigslist replacement.

No idea. Spendy kit. Never seen one before, so not qualified to give an answer. Personally, I'd replace the housing with a used one. But I know I can have the motor out and the gimbal off in a couple hours.

That repair kit seems about as expensive as buying a used gimbal housing. Not sure what the advantage is to the repair kit.

so, you dont think the sierra repair kit will hold up?

the link below is the sierra repair kit

No I wouldn’t use it. It’s a flanged pvc ring that gets epoxied to the gimbal housing Around your broken lip.

To be honest this kit looks like a bucket of $hit the more you stir it up the more it will stink.
it also looks like your gimbal has some other corrosion on it in other areas so you are better off getting a good used one.

There’s a guy in Michigan who sells on eBay who sells fresh water tear out engines gimbal housings etc . If you can turn wrenches it’s less work than you think to pull the engine and gimbal housings.

++ to what Scott said. If I knew I had the parts I needed, I would bet good money I could do the swap in a single longish day. Hardest part would be waiting on the rubber cement to dry holding the new gasket ring onto the gimbal housing.
