I have a 1961 chris craft with a 283H flywheel forward engine. I have a nice used flywheel with a good ring gear I want to put on. both flywheels have casting # 3729004 and GM3. one has #11460,the other K2360 which I think are date of manufacture codes. my question is are they interchangeable? the one I took off has 7 balancing holes drilled in it while the other has 2. from everything I have read this engine is internally balanced and uses a neutral balance flywheel. can it be possible that when made they were that far off that one required that much more material be removed to balance. I don't know if I should put it on or not. any help would really be appreciated. thanks, kevin...IMG_20210413_144842229.jpgIMG_20210413_144842229.jpg

With the same part number they should both be the same. The difference in balancing holes most likely was better manufacturing processes for the newer one.

Ayuh,.... Appears alittle late now, But,.....
You do know you could have just replaced the ring gear, rather than the whole flywheel, right,..??

Ayuh,...... You should be able to easily sell the pretty one to get yer money back,......
It'll run on 89% of the SBCs out there,..... which is Millions of 'em,.....

The new ring gear for yer's can be found at 'bout any decent autoparts retailer,......
They only come in 2 sizes, the 12", 'n the 14",.....
Heatin' the new one in the oven at 450* for 20 minutes, 'n it'll literally drop into place on the cleaned prepped flywheel, at room temp,....

Casting numbers are not final part numbers.
