Hi,

I have some starter problems with my -06 50hp Mercury. The problem is that starter motor keeps spinning after the engine starts, but when I put the gear on F or R the starter stops spinning. I think it is not normal that when engine is in N after I have started it and the starter keeps still spinning?

This is also a issue because when i change from F to N it will hit the flyweel and after that the starter starts to spin again. What could cause this kind of problem, any help very very appreciated?
Also the spinning stops when I move abit the remote control lever in N position(so before the gear goes in)?

Seems to be someway in connection with gears and electrical wires? but I cant understand it how

Thanks!!

Welcome aboard.

Gonna guess the ignition switch is not returning to Run from Start and when moving the control out of Neutral, power is broken to the solenoid through the Neutral Safety switch.

Hi GA_Boater,

thanks for your reply. I am not so familar with electrical things, more mechanical background.
But how can i check this in general?
Should i change/replace the ignition or what do you mean with this ”the ignition switch is not returning to Run from Start”?

”the ignition switch is not returning to Run from Start”

Just like your car or truck, when you start it and release the key, the key should snap back to the Run position. If it doesn't snap to Run, the starter will continue to run.

Need to check that! Thanks!

This starter thing solved. Problem was simple as the ignition switch, did not release the key 🙂. Some WD-40 solved that one.

Noticed another thing. Battery is fully charged and shows 12,8V when connected, but when I fire motor up it will drop to 12,4V. If I give rpms, it doesnt matter.
And with 15-20min drive i did not loose the voltage, showed still 12,8V? 🤨
Shouldnt it be over 13V, I have red that outboards charging system is abit different than motorbikes/cars.
