Longshot help for friend, '98 EFI fuel check valve?

Long shot here, but I have an...over excited... friend who bought a '98 Regal with a "new" engine that ran in the driveway. It is apparently missing a "fuel pressure check valve" because the guy that replaced the engine forgot to put it in and is an "easy fix". The boat is not nearby so I can't check it out directly. Yes, everything about this conversation had me banging my head against a wall. So I do have the serial # at least, 0L2xxxxx, and I think the fuel system is original, but who knows. It comes back as a '98 5.7 EFI. Looking at the parts diagram it appears to be TBI? I don't see a check valve anywhere. I'm told that the starting procedure is turn on key, let fuel pump run, shut off, repeat and then start. Leads me to think it's a check valve somewhere in the fuel line to keep the fuel from bleeding back to the tank, but I don't see any likely suspects in the fuel filter assembly or the pump diagram. Any thoughts?

My boat has TBI and the check valve is in the fuel pump itself. Generally all we do is turn the key and go.
If they are turning the key on and off to start might be a weak fuel pump or bad valve on that. Can check the pressure and leak down on the hose going to the throttle body.

Aside from the start process any other issues with engines? I would have required a sea test myself. Running on land does not mean the engine makes power.

Yes... I would have advised against this boat for a number of reasons. Do you have a parts diagram showing the valve, or is it integral to the pump?

It's integral to the pump. Now on mine its a standard electric fuel pump for a Chevy 305 engine.

It's a part that goes bad on the trucks as well.. It allows the line to drain back to the tank. The solution is to cycle the key twice and hit the starter after the second prime... OR just accept the long crank and it'll start.. I had a truck with the valve that was bad. I just cranked it

Serial # at least, 0L2xxxxx,
Merc had some weak check valves in that year range...Here's some study guides for you Mike.

With the fuel pump check valves known, it seems challenging to imagine that installing a new engine the tech would of removed the check valve form the fuel pump itself then forget to reinstall it...I'd have to wonder if the verbiage is crossed somewhere along the lines and their referring to the marine fuel tank side "anti-siphon valve fitting" which has a check ball + coil spring inside...Which I know you know about the anti-siphon valve Mike, It's just more mentioned here for conversation purposes is all. ;)

Turns out that the part in question was the anti siphon valve. Which is clearly a separate issue from the starting. The fuel pump sounds like a likely suspect for that...
