Propeller wont spin.

we have a 1976 welcraft airslot with a 3.0 mercury mercuriser with gen1 outside and we put in gear and the propeller will not spin. When we have engine off in neutral its pins but we put in forward it locks in one direction and clicks in the other direction.

That how it works. You can't put it in gear and turn motor with the prop. The clicking is the dog clutch protecting the motor in case of a prop strike. Reverse locks the prop in both directions.

No, the prop is not spinning when it is running and in gear

If prop dont spin either upper gears failed/coupler spun or driveshaft broke. If it tends to overheat it the coupler or driveshaft.

How would we check that? Do I need to out in shop.

if its a failed coupler, the drive comes off and the motor comes out

Check it locks one way in reverse and forward. If it was the coupler you’d imagine the prop might be able to be turned when it should be locked. If it was the gearbox failing..you’d imagine you wouldn’t be able to get it locked both gears and into neutral the way you can ?? Not sure.
