I just changed the starter and solenoid on a 1977 115 Hp Evinrude motor and when I hooked the battery back up immediately the starter engaged the fly wheel. Do I have a wire crossed?
I just bought a new battery and I sure don't want to burn everything up I just bought. Any help would be appreciated? Have a blessed day.

It sure sounds like you crossed a cable somewhere. If you have a voltmeter, disconnect the cables and find the cable that has 12v only when the key switch is in the start position.

thanks, so much for the information, I don't know why I didn't tape them up instead of trying to remember, I have had a bad day all day.

Outboards tend to use the starter solenoid to connect multiple cables, as a convenience. You should have only one cable on each of the smaller solenoid terminals, (usually yellow/red and black) and only one cable on the starter cable terminal. The rest should be on the battery cable terminal.

Thanks so much, I moved some wires around today with no luck and even went by a Boat Mechanic Shop and everything he had was 15 years newer than what I had, my starter solenoid, which is on the boat is off a ford pickup and this is what I have always had and replaced with. The motor is 1977 model Evinrude 115

???-----Why would you even think of using a solenoid other than a factory one.----And I say that 9 out of 10 solenoids that are replaced are in good working order !

You will want to use a Johnnyrude solenoid. Automotive solenoids have an annoying habit of sparking, when energized. Not good under the hood of an OB with gas fumes everywhere.
