Hello everyone! Just picked up a motor for my whaler and I need controls and cables. I don’t want the used old side mount ones that you can find. What is the correct style of cables that directly fit this motor without having to rig it? Thanks!

Sounds like you are looking for a binnacle mount control?

The "right" box would be a '60s Simplex box, which is maybe a little more stylized than the earlier ones. That would be the correct fit, as you say.

I believe a single lever control box with the big red plug can be fitted by a competent individual.

What type of cable am I looking for that would connect to this type of control? Should I just be looking for ones with an eylet on both ends to connect to the bolts on the gear selector and throttle? Does it connect the same inside the control box ?

Believe so (choice of two types) -- but will stand corrected. Get the box first, then the cables -- in fact, measure for cables (measure old ones if you still have them). Look for a box complete with cables.

I did a '63 Big Twin 10 or 15 years ago, on a 13' Whaler, but no recollection of measurements -- pretty short, of course, for the Whaler.

This, perhaps: https://www.ebay.com/itm/114867494064?hash=item1abea2dcb0:g:Kf8AAOSwLidgxT-~

Awsome. That’s probably exactly what I need. Was it a 40 you put on your 13? How did it go?

Fast and wet, and a little bumpy, as I recall. I never got another Whaler, but carry no grudges. Nice rigs. I'm still a little curious about the 11' Whaler with maybe an 18, but I'm too fat for that now I think.

Do you recall how much of a stream came out of the cooling outlet on the 40? Mine didn’t seem to have much of a stream so I pulled the impeller. It’s worn but all the fins are there. Was installed in the correct direction and tube grommets seem fine. Getting a new impeller in the morning but maybe these don’t squirt as much as I’m used to?

This was in a test barrel btw Idk if that would make a difference because of the intake setup.

If you were on skis behind the boat water would be pouring out that tube.-----Then when the boat stopped water and water vapor would be pouring out that tube.----Often mistaken for steam and overheating !----Then as motor cools it reverts to just spitting water out with exhaust.-----So install the new impeller.-----Make sure thermostat is properly installed.----Test the overheat warning light.----Better yet is to install a warning horn.

Thanks. I will replace the thermostat too. First old Johnson and seems like the last owner was a hack so I’m running thru the whole thing. (Found gaskets Poorly cut out of what looked like bicycle inner tube) Lol I re did the carb with the factory kit and cleaned and lubed everything on it. Now doing the impeller and Pressure testing bottom end seals! Although it was owned by a hack it’s in very good shape!

Oh btw. Overheat light. Does it complete ground? This is a non generator engine. Should I connect power to one end of bulb then run ground to that after grounding starter lug to battery ?
