This engine belongs to a 1985 four winns 195 Horizon cuddy. I have not been able to find any info on this engine. I don't think it comes with an alternator, anyway it doesn't have one. It looks like the power steering pump was taken off. Do I need it? Some threads state that its ok to leave it off. Here are my numbers:
Engine 0A494867 MCM170
Drive unit 0A456020
Transom Assembly 0A506228

Any information that you can provide I appreciate it. I have looked online and can't fine anything. I need engine diagram, electrical diagram. More importantly did it come with and alternator and do I need to replace the power steering pump.

Thank you

Yes, it has alternator. Can't help with the wiring diagram, but here is the engine diagram;

PS - This engine is called a 470.

PPS - All this might not help when you ignore or can't read the DO NOT POST IN THIS SECTION warning. The thread could have been deleted, but I moved it to the correct section.

Sorry, I am new at this. Didn't realized I posted my question in the FQA section. I hope I am now in the correct forum. I purchase the boat and the boat didn't come with an alternator. I have seen picture on the web of similar engines with no alternator. Thank you for your help. So should I look for 470 engines?

It's not really an alternator on that engine. It is but it isn't. It's basically an outboard stator on the front of the engine. There are alternator kits for it as it's really horrible the way they came from the factory

Well I am such and idiot, a boat alternator does not look the same as a car alternator. At least not for this model. How about the boat not having a power steering pump? Do I really needed?

Does your boat have power steering? Some do, some don't.
Look for hydraulic lines attached to the steering ram. Mine (4.3L) is behind the engine, but yours maybe different, I have no idea.

If there is no alternator, why is there a water cooled rectifier/regulator to convert AC to DC? The stator is the fixed part and the rotor is the flywheel. It really is an alternator.

your mercruiser 470 is a platypus engine

it is unique to mercruiser and mercruiser only, and it has been obsolete for over 30 years

it is a mercruiser designed block, a mercruiser designed crank, a modified ford 460 head and pistons, a GM flywheel and a mercruiser outboard charging coil and stator on the front damper. it uses a timing chain. the charging coil and stator requires an obsolete (No longer available) water cooled voltage regulator. that voltage regulator can be found, however it costs more than an alternator conversion.

I would do some reading on the mercruiser 470 and its problems

additionally, your 37 year old boat will most likely have structural issues.

the factory manual for the 3.7 (224 cubic inch) motor has the wiring diagrams, etc.

the power steering pump is simply a saginaw "can-o-ham" pump. you can get a rebuild kit for $14 and a new pump (minus reservoir) for $45. its the same power steering pump used on GM vehicles from the 50's on

Yes, it is an alternator, but not in the traditional sense, which is why he couldn't locate it

Wow, that is a lot to take in. I hook up the battery and the engine wanted to turn. The spark plugs look good, has oil, and antifreeze. The previous owner took to a mechanic and he recommended an alternator conversion kit, new spark plugs wires, cap, rotor. and ignition coil. Plus a new impeller. Is there a engine that I can swap or replace this old obsolete engine with? Does anyone know? or is it worth fixing this one?

I get it the fly will in the front of the engine is the alternator cover. The components inside act as an actual alternator.

its going to be a challenge to get this boat up and running, but I am willing to take the time to figure things out. I will research the 470 series like Scott mention and see what I can find there.

Thank you everyone, please feel free to provide me with any ideas or suggestions as to go about getting this old boat back in the water rather than in a junk yard.

If the boat is nice, and the engine runs good, it's worth it. 4.3L replaced the 3.7L and is what the boat would have come with if it were built after 1990

A good tune up wouldn't hurt it if it runs and does not overheat... The cooling system on a 3.7L needs to be kept up to 100% all the time. One overheat and the motor is probably toasted.. BUT they are strong when they are running right

Your engine looks like the one in my Seville Sea Ray, 1985. I’ve had it since 1993 & overhauled it once. It ran hot & the aluminum block separated from part of an iron cylinder sleeve. I filled that crack with JB Weld, shaved the block & it ran well for years.
It later lost oil pressure & I replaced it with a simulator engine that I’m running now.
Initially I
I’ll used the stator but I put in an alternator kit & it works great.
I replaced the heat exchanger several years ago.
It’s a strong & powerful engine.
Mine is now running low oil pressure when hot & idle. I don’t think there are many alternatives but to use this engine in my boat.
I’ll be happy to share any information I have with you.

It does have a water impeller up front. That impeller rides in the end of the cam. If it begins loosing water from that cover up front it could be due to the seal being worn or even the cam having wear & could be polished to fix that.
ask me how I know this!

What is engine specs of the 4.3L that replace the 3.7L? I might wan to go that route.
