Volvo Penta 4 Cyl in a 1988 Baretta

So I just purchased a 1988 Baretta of a private owner. Finally had the chance to take it out on the water tonight. While I was going out and began opening the throttle up to see how she runs, the boat all of a sudden stalls out and won't idle. Found a small fuel leak at the carb connection from the fuel pump. Also noticed a hose that isn't connected to anything, that looks like a PVC valve should be connected to it. The hose blows air out of it and not a vacuum as I thought it may be. The boat has a single barrel carbuerator. It seemed to run as if it was starving for fuel and getting too much air. Anyone else have a similar situation with their boat with the same engine?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... Which 4 cylinder,..??
Volvo used one of their own, as well as the GM 4 banger,....

Start at the fuel tank, 'n clean yer way to the carb to find the fuel restriction,....
The vent hose goes to the carb, or the flame arrester, donno which in yer case,....

Thanks Bondo, I am going to drain some fuel out of it and see what kind of condition it is in and then check the points and see what they look like, but it wasn't really running rough. It just acted like it was not getting enough fuel. As far as the tube that goes up to the carb that looks like the vent hose, is that supposed to be attached somehow? It is not currently, I forgot to take a couple of pics tonight after work so I am going to do that tomorrow. This way people can see what I am referring too. I found the carb numbers and engine numbers with the help of Flyingfishcarburetors.com

Bondo, also the engine is the AQ 131 D.

That's a Volvo motor, they started with the GM in the 90's

Post some pics of the motor and the prop.
The wrong prop can give HORRIBLE performance.
It says AQ131 but it's only a 120hp.

Ok I will do that. I was going to take some last night and then forgot. I am new to the boating scene so trying to learn all I can. I am handy when it comes to mechanics, but new to boats so I just want to be sure I buy and do the right things the first time around.

I also have another question. Can you use carb cleaner on this and run the boat to try and clean the carb like a car and can I use carb cleaner on the flame arrester? The part that looks like the air filter? I checked the Volvo Penta store and it says that part is over 500.00. HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE??? Thanks.

Ayuh,..... You can do that,.....
But honestly, if the carb needs cleanin', it should be pulled disassembled, 'n actually Rebuilt,.....

I realize that could be what I may need to do but trying to see what other options I may have before I do that. Figured I may try this and see how it does. I ordered a carb rebuild kit just incase.

So I ended up draining most of the fuel out of the boat and it looked like urine and not fuel. Put in some new ethanol free gas and ran the motor but it still does not run as well as it should. Ended up removing the carburetor and found some areas that definitely need some attention. Took the cover off the diaphragm and a bunch of sediment came out and the piece just above that was full of sediment as well and the small screen that goes around the bolt could barely be seen through. So I am looking into sending my carb to flyingfishcarburetors to have them rebuild it. It will come with a one year warranty and be done in about 3-5 days after they receive the carb. Total cost, 238.00 plus 23.00 to ship it back to me.

Carb has been sent out today, hopefully make it there thursday and be back to me sometime next week I hope. I want to be able to use the boat as much as possible before the nice summer weather goes away. I hope it comes back and the boat runs as it should. Fingers crossed.

So I received the call today that my carburetor is done and on its way back today via UPS. Hopefully it is back by Monday and I can install it back on the boat so I can get her back on the water. So anxious to be able to take it out and have some fun. I will update when it is all complete and the boat is on the water.

Before you install the rebuilt carburetor add a marine approved fuel filter/water separator kit.

Way ahead of you guys, already purchased 2 new filters for that reason. I definitely don't want to add more junk to the new carb.

So I finally got the carburetor back today and got it installed on the boat tonight. Changed out the fuel/water separator and so glad I did before I started the boat. The fuel and water that came out of that thing was disgusting. I will be changing it again soon after I put a few hours on the boat to get some fresh fuel run through the system. The fuel that came out of the filter kind of looked like redish orange beer. You could see the water sitting on the top as well. As far as the carb, it looks great and the boat runs 10 times better than it did before hand. Just had to adjust the idle some but it runs great. Taking it out on the water finally tomorrow and hope it goes better than the first time.

Ayuh,..... Water is always Under the fuel, as it's much heavier,....

I didn't however get the tank totally dry and any sediment that could be left in it. This is why I am going to change the fuel filter a few times to try and get all the bad **** out of it.

Sounds like you are on top of it. keep checking or changing filters until its clean.
