guys i am a super boating nube that is 55 and looking for a bowrider first boat to tool around my "ocean state" of rhode island. I have a 10-15k budget and have one question. Which type of engine/drive is best for use in shallow water? i am seeing a few different set ups in that range. We have a bay loaded with nooks and crannies and remote beaches which i would like to drop anchor close to and explore.

You want a OB with a aluminum prop. Could also install a prop guard if its real bad

When operating in shallows with underwater snags, run at a low idle so the engine will stall before any damage can be done to the prop or gear case.
Earlier this summer I was exploring some backwaters with my 1448 and, sure enough, caught a tree root. Motor stopped, pulled it up, separated root from prop, then went on my way. Not even a ding! I love exploring by boat.

There are outboard motors with jet drive. You may want that if bay is real shallow in a lot of places.

Outboard jet drives are only about 70% as efficient as prop outboards.
