Pulled lower unit checked impeller, looks like new soft and no pieces gone or cracks anywhere, pulled hose off head and start no water coming out. Could I have a bad thermostat?

Is there water at the pee hose?
Where you running on muffs in a barrel or in the water?

Running with muffs pulled hose off fitting at side of engine and nothing there… ordered an impeller anyway but don’t see an issue with current one

Try blowing compressed air into the water tubes while you have the lower unit off.
Any chance you were running in mud or fine sand? Has the motor lived in salt or fresh water?

Motors been sitting about 6 years… freshwater only. Don’t know anything else about it. The original motor on a 91’ boat I purchased.

Definitely change the water pump or a least the impeller.
If you don’t have compressed air try a hose and a piece of wire if needed and clean out the water tubes. Check the water intake screen on the lower could be plugged up with a mud dobber nest or something like that. If you can get in it a barrel you would be better off than on muffs.
Best of luck.

Is the tell tale plugged? Water tube lined up in the pump housing? Key installed.
