I removed my lower unit to replace the water pump on my alpha 1 gen 2, 2006 MerCruiser outdrive. In the process of that I noticed the shift linkage in the top half of the unit appeared to be weeping gear oil from a small hole. Is this normal?

Hi there, welcome to iboats forums...:)

Sorry no, 'oil leaking is not going to be normal...When you removed the lower gear housing from the top driveshaft housing, did you reinstall the little oil seal that's between the two part assemblies during reassembly as that could be one reason of a few that it's leaking oil.

See item number 7, https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/30862/2686/140

Thank you for the quick reply and the welcome! The drive is still apart, as I haven’t yet installed the water pump and put it back together. The oil leak is from the upper unit, what might be described as the upper shift assembly. It is the top piece that fits over number 32 in the diagram you had attached.

I should add, I do have the vent screw removed in the upper housing still from when I drained the drive oil before separating.

Pull the upper as likely going to find it full of oil( yoke seal)

FunT, that is a quad seal and would not cause oil to leak from the upper shift shaft

The quad seal cuts grooves into yoke and causes oil to leak into u-joint bellows .If rubber gasket ring is rolled oil can leak into shift cable area and leak out shaft. Have seen this several times on early Alphas.
