I have a 1996 25 HP Johnson, model J25TKLEDC and cannot start with an electric start. The motor runs fine when I pull rope start, but cannot get it in neutral to use the electric start. Any ideas on a fix?

Everything as should be, tiller model. I was able to start this motor with the electric start one time after I purchased a month ago. The guy I bought it from said you had to "wiggle" with shifting handle to get it in the "right position"/neutral to get it to start. Now I cannot seem to find that "sweet spot"

I have located the neutral safety switch and have found that the 15 amp fuse was bad. I replaced 2 times and the fuse continues to blow upon replacing. Also tried a 20 amp fuse and it blew as well.
Any ideas?

look for a grounded wire or short ..should be easy to track down

take a ohms reading while wiggling the wires around if it fluctuates you likely have a chaffed wire. if solid then the load is likely shorted to ground internally

Why does the nuetral safety switch have a fuse on it?
There is a fuse #83 that is a spare, but it replaces a fuse located on the attached diagram that appears to lead to the neutral safety switch and another area. Not sure if it really is part of the neutral safety switch. I cannot see on the diagram where this fuse is, but it is the one that continues to blow.

???---Well,--- the 12 volts from the battery needs a fuse and the feed to the solenoid is 12 volts.----Then goes to ground via the safety switch.-----So a problem with that wiring / solenoid and the fuse goes ----phoooofff.

On a tiller the fuse usually goes between the rectifier and the big positive side of the solenoid. Do you have a key or pushbutton?

Possibly a chafed / bare wire from key to solenoid.----Or from solenoid wire to neutral switch and to ground.----Or internal short in solenoid.

sounds like there is a dead or misadjusted switch in your remote controlller. Typically, the control handle comes off and the switch is around the hub.
