Hot light on dash

I have a 2004 115 hp Johnson OB that the hot indicator came on once last year, I shut the motor off, restarted and light was gone, proceeded to the boat ramp and the light did not appear anymore. Is this something to be concerned with or could it be a one time occurrence.

could have been temporary blockage sucked on the water inlet.
how long ago was the impeller serviced ?

Model # of motor ?---2 or 4 stroke ?-----Does it live at a dock ?----Fresh water or salty / dirty water.----New impeller installed every 5 years ?

I’m the 2nd owner, I’ve had it for 2yrs but have never had impeller serviced.

unless you can confirm the age of the impeller you may as well tend to it just in case it could be 10 + years old :-(

On many smaller outboard motors ( older motor from say the 60's & 70's ) there is no warning system or shutdown on overheat system.------You would get blisters on your tongue to explain that impellers need to be replaced.-----Motors will run till it is too late !!

replacing the impeller and doing every bit of maintenance is required with a new-to-you used motor.

replace the impeller
drain the gear lube and pressure test the gear box
service any anode
service every filter
change the plugs

if the motor came on a boat on a trailer, also service the bearings, brakes, coupler, etc.

Then test the operating temp with an infrared tester.
